When you open lots of tabs in Opera browser, the tab bar or tab strip gets overloaded with tiny icons of all running tabs. It becomes hard to identify tabs and click on the desired tab.

What is Horizontal Tab Scrolling Feature?

To fix this tab overloading problem, Opera team has added a new feature called “Horizontal tab scrolling” to Opera 88 and later versions. This feature automatically adds a scrollbar to the tab strip when it detects many tabs have been opened in the browser which don’t fit on the tab strip properly.

Following image shows a comparison of the new and old behavior of tab strip when lots of tabs are opened in Opera browser:

As you can see in above image, in newer versions of Opera browser, as soon as you start opening lots of tabs, the browser automatically displays a horizontal scrollbar at the top of tab strip along with Left and Right buttons so that the user can easily navigate between all running tabs. On the other hand, in previous versions of Opera, there is no scrollbar on tab strip and Opera is showing small icons of tabs.

Enable or Disable Horizontal Tab Scrolling Feature in Opera

Opera team has provided an option to turn the horizontal tab scrolling feature on or off. If a user doesn’t find the feature useful and want to disable it, there is a built-in option to deactivate the horizontal tab scrolling feature.

Similarly, if the feature is not activated in your Opera browser and you want to enable it, the same option can be used to activate the horizontal tab scrolling feature.

  1. Thank you dear as always @VG

I didn’t even realize this great feature by Opera Team.

  2. Dear VG,
    please help me.
I have many tabs open in Opera. (Usually more than 100)
Scrolling between tabs was not a problem in previous versions. But now, unfortunately, the new Opera version has been installed and a lot of things have gone wrong. 🙁
My main question is that there is no arrow pointing to the right and left anywhere in the horizontal scrolling row.
How to adjust the scrolling to work properly? As it worked in the previous version.
    Thank you.

  3. Fixed the Horizontal scrolling problem in opera. Thanks but still have a major problem.
I got 1452 tabs open across all 24 workspaces atm.
When trying to move tabs from one Workspace to another, now only have an array of 23 icons when right-click on a tab, not the names given to each Workspace. Try remembering what icon you allotted to each of your 24 Workspaces and see if you can get em all right?? Do you have a ‘fix’ for that?
Cause now I want to go back to the prev. version of Opera. Or maybe they could give even MORE Workspaces, cause I got the 24 of them max’d out. Thanks in advance.

  4. Hi!
I also have the problem reported by Edith Barodi on July 9, 2023, at 10:33 am. I followed all the steps indicated by VG, but I stumbled on enabled/disabled use horizontal tab cycler because there is no #horizontal-tab-cycler in the “Experiments” page. My Opera version is 101.0.4843.33. I also use Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Brave. All have horizontal tab scroll, only Opera, my default browser, does not.
    Regards.
    Tiberius, Opera fan.
