[Tip] Disable or Remove Automatic Video Pop-out in Opera Browser
Newer versions of Opera browser (version 83 and later) come with a new feature called “Automatic Video Pop out“. This feature automatically pops out the currently playing video in Opera if the user switches to another tab. This functionality is an extension to the previous Video conferencing pop-out feature.
When you open a webpage in Opera which contains a playing video and you switch to another tab, Opera automatically pops out the playing video in PIP mode so that you can keep watching the video while working on a different tab. As soon as you switch to the original tab containing the video, the video automatically pops back in the tab.

Although it’s a good feature but many Opera users might not like it if they don’t want to watch the video but Opera automatically pops out the video without their permission. Fortunately, Opera team has provided multiple ways to disable or remove the new feature.

1. Disable Automatic Video Pop out Feature Using PIP Window
It’s the easiest and quickest way to get rid of the automatic video pop-out feature in Opera.
1. When Opera pops out the playing video in PIP window, hover the mouse cursor over the video pop-up and you’ll see Control (cog wheel) icon present at the top-right corner near the Close button.
2. Click on the Control button and Opera will show options to toggle the automatic video pop-out behavior.

Set the toggle button given next to “Automatically pop out video” to OFF.
That’s it. Now Opera will no longer pop out any video automatically.
PS: There is another option provided to enable/disable transparency effect in video pop-out.
2. Disable Automatic Video Pop out Feature Using Opera Settings
If you don’t want to play a video to disable the automatic video pop-out feature, you can directly disable the feature using Opera Settings page.
1. Launch Opera web browser, click on Opera Menu button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.
2. Now scroll down to bottom on settings page and click on “Advanced” link. It’ll show advanced settings options.
3. Again scroll down and you’ll see “Video pop out” section. Under this section, you’ll see “Enable video pop out” option.
Set the toggle button to OFF to disable automatic video pop-out feature in Opera.
If you also want to disable video conferencing pop-out feature in Opera, disable the “Enable videoconferencing pop out” option present under “Videoconferencing pop out” section.
PS: In future, if you want to restore automatic video pop-out feature in Opera, set above mentioned option to ON again.
3. Completely Remove Automatic Video Pop out Feature in Opera Using Flags Page
There is also a hidden secret preference/flag to permanently disable or remove automatic video pop-out feature in Opera. You can modify this secret flag and it’ll completely deactivate the feature in Opera. It’ll also remove the option to enable/disable automatic video pop-out feature from Opera Settings page.
If you don’t need the automatic video pop out feature, you can turn it off completely using following steps:
1. Launch Opera web browser and type opera://flags in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments“.
2. Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type popout. It’ll show following option in the result:

3. To deactivate and disable new automatic video pop out feature in Opera browser, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.
4. Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.
That’s it. You have successfully turned off automatic video pop out feature in Opera web browser.
PS: In future, if you decide to enable automatic video pop-out feature again in Opera, set above mentioned flag to Default or Enabled again.
