[Tip] Disable or Remove Opera Splash Screen or Startup Logo and Sound

UPDATE: New method added to disable Opera splash screen and startup sound easily.

If you want to get rid of the annoying extra splash screen or startup logo which appears when you launch Opera web browser, this article will help you in disabling or removing the splash screen permanently. The trick given in this article will work in all versions of Opera web browser such as Stable, Beta, Developer or Opera GX.

When Opera team launched version 100 of the popular Opera web browser, they called it Opera One. Opera team introduced a redesigned UI (user interface) or theme along with several new features such as tab islands, Aria AI, etc in Opera One web browser. You can read our exclusive review of new Opera UI and features in following exclusive article:

Apart from the new features, Opera 100 and later versions also come with a splash screen which is also called startup logo. When you launch Opera web browser, following splash screen is displayed by the web browser:

The splash screen also plays some music in background and the volume of the sound is very loud and can annoy the user.

Splash screen or startup logo were used long time back in 80s or 90s by software programs to promote their brand or to impress the end user by showing the extra eye candy stuff. But now-a-days splash screen are no longer used by software developers.

Splash screen causes a delay in browser launch time and it might irritate the user. Although the splash screen should be displayed only the first time when a user launches Opera web browser after installation or new version update but many Opera users have reported that the splash screen appears each time they open the web browser.

Now many Opera browser users want to completely disable or remove the splash screen to reduce the launch time and make the startup process faster. Unfortunately, Opera team has not provided any setting or preference/flag to disable the splash screen.

New Method to Disable Opera Splash Screen and Startup Sound

I have found a hidden secret preference/flag present in Opera browser which can be modified to disable the splash screen and startup sound. If you want to get rid of the splash screen and sound in Opera browser, following steps will help you:

1. Launch Opera One web browser and type opera://flags in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments“.

2. Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type intro. It’ll show following option in the result:

Opera One introduction

Enables Opera One introduction page – Mac, Windows, Linux

#opera-one-introduction

3. To disable the splash screen and sound in Opera, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.

4. Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.

That’s it. It should permanently turn off the splash screen and startup sound when you launch Opera browser.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings, set the above mentioned flag value to Default.

Manual Method to Remove Opera Splash Screen and Startup Sound

I have found a workaround to remove the splash screen completely from Opera web browser. I did some research. When the splash screen appeared, I launched the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) tool and I noticed that Opera uses a dedicated executable opera_gx_splash.exe to display the splash screen.

Following screenshot shows opera_gx_splash.exe process running in background when we launch Opera web browser:

The opera_gx_splash.exe executable is immediately closed by Opera browser as soon as the splash screen disappears. So the opera_gx_splash.exe file is only being used by Opera browser to display the extra splash screen at startup.

To get rid of the Opera splash screen, we just need to delete the opera_gx_splash.exe file from Opera directory. The EXE file is stored under following location:

C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\Version_Number\

Here User_Name is your user account name in Windows and Version_Number is the latest version of Opera web browser installed in your computer system.

Opera_GX_Splash_EXE_Executable_File_Location_File_Explorer.png

You can get the correct path using opera://about URL in Opera web browser. Alternatively, click on Opera Menu button and select Help -> About Opera option. Copy the path given next to Paths -> Install.

Install_Profile_Cache_Folder_Paths_Opera_Help_About_Page.png

Now paste the path in RUN dialog box (WIN+R) or File Explorer address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the above mentioned folder.

Now open the highest version number folder and you’ll see opera_gx_splash.exe file present inside the folder.

Select the file and Delete it.

That’s it. Now splash screen will no longer appear whenever you launch Opera web browser. Remember when a new version of Opera is installed, you’ll need to delete the opera_gx_splash.exe file again present under the new version folder using the above mentioned steps.

BONUS TIP:

If you don’t want to copy/paste the folder path from Opera about page, here is a quick method to delete the opera_gx_splash.exe file. Open File Explorer, go to C: drive and search for the opera_gx_splash.exe file using the Search box. When the search completes, select all instances of the EXE file and delete them.

PS: Opera team is working on a preference to disable or remove splash screen in future versions of Opera browser. The preference might be available in Opera 102 and later versions.

  1. Thank you so much for the tip about deleting opera_gx_splash.exe. Operas splash screen was very annoying. I had to open opera://about to find the right path.

  2. Hello man, i’m Marion from France, thank you for your advice, Manon (my mate lol) helps me to doing this things because it makes me a lot of troubles in my head. See you may be in the McDonald’s of Pontchateau <3

  3. The first tip, disabling did not work, deleting the file from the appdata folder worked. Thanks, that is as annoying as anything.

  4. Bruh. You’re literally a lifesaver man!
That start-up sound and logo animation was so annoying that I had already started looking for an alternative to Opera mini, though transferring my browser records and history would have been a pain in the neck.
I’m quite conservative, in that I don’t like random changes, especially to something that has been working perfectly for me. It causes all this inconvenience trying to figure out the new ways and retraining myself to use a system on autopilot after it’s updated, yet it wasn’t even broken to begin with, is to me, one of the most frustrating things ever.
Though I didn’t wanna risk losing my life’s work just because of some sound that Opera suddenly decided to create.
I mean, what’s the need for all these useless updates that are done every three seconds?
Just makes the browser more and more undesirable and harder to work with for somebody that prefers functionality to this shiny graphics and bells and whistles.
Long story short, I had tried a few of the recommendations on different pages with no success.

But, your solution worked like a charm.
    Thanks and many blessings.

  5. For the new version, 102.0.4880.40, I’m getting the intro splash EVERY time it opens, not just the first.

Also, only deleting the opera_gx_splash.exe worked for me. The “intro” trick does not. Thanks.

  6. It annoys me so much this thing that starts when I start the opera and I can’t find how to remove it that I’m thinking of using another browser

  7. Deactivating intro did not work.
Deleting opera_gx_splash.exe (there were two of them) worked!

    Thank you!

  8. You don’t need to delete the executable. You can just rename it instead. For example, I renamed it to opera_gx_splash-save.exe. Splash intro gone on startup.

  9. The adjustment using opera://flags did not work, but deleting/renaming the splash-executable did the trick. Unfortunately that last trick is restored after a installment of a new Opera version, so a formal setting to disable the splash-screen is definitely a requirement for future version. Splash-screens are so outdated, especially when they take time to start, and also make noise.

  10. Setting the intro flag did not work for me. The second method, deleting opera_gx_splash.exe, worked perfectly.

Windows 10, Opera Stable version number: 102.0.4880.40

  11. On OperaPortable the path for opera_gx_splash.exe is …\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Opera\102.0.4880.56\

  12. Thank you so much! That splash screen made me want to pull my hair out every time I started Opera.

  13. Thank you very much.
The splash screen was more than just annoying.
It took a long time to find this description to get rid of it.

Once again: thank you very much

  14. I switch off sound and it comes back after some time. What a practice not to ask a user about sound. We had such a problem in 90es when websites started to use sounds and everybody agreed that no user must be destructed and it is his choice if he wants to hear sound on websites. Now Opera plays sounds without asking right on the desktop. Don’t the opera developers see the negative response about their splash screen?

  15. This has been up for a few MONTHS now and they still couldn’t add a line of code to disable the time killer after showing it for the first time. I am uninstalling Opera coz this is just unacceptable, this company plain-straight WASTES time of its users and doesn’t care. Nobody should use their products.

  16. What a gift your solution is to that really annoying problem! Thank you. I am indebted to you.
    How can I repay you?

  17. New location is now username/appdata/local/opera software.

The first tip did not work. Just delete the splash screen inside of the version number folder. Opera GX is programmed by people who think their ideas are cute. I’m going to save my bookmarks and look for a new browser.

  18. This worked perfectly … until Opera got updated just now, and oh no, it’s back!! I have gone through this again and also deleted the splash .exe file. Why do Opera not see that everyone is not liking this and stop doing it???
Thanks for helping to make it go away.

  19. After 2 years splash can be disable via settings only in Gaming Browsers version, not common browser version. Or remove file after update each time.
Maybe they are trying to move user base to it. Because I don’t see any other reason to annoy users.

  20. reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\opera_gx_splash.exe" /v Debugger /d rundll32
