[Tip] Disable Opera Auto Run When Computer Starts

Opera browser 94 and later versions come with a new “Auto Run” feature which helps Opera to automatically launch when the computer starts. If you find this auto run feature annoying, this article will help you in disabling this feature.

Recently many Opera users complained that when they upgraded or installed Opera newer versions, the browser started opening automatically as soon as they logged into their user account in Windows operating system. When a user starts his computer and the Desktop loads, Opera browser automatically appears on user’s computer screen.

Actually Opera team has implemented a new Autorun feature in Opera 94 and later versions. This feature allows Opera to auto start with Windows so that Opera can run in background and can open instantly whenever the user wants to use the browser.

Fortunately, Opera team has provided an easy option in Opera Settings to disable or turn off auto run feature.

PS: If you fresh install Opera, there is an option available in setup wizard to disable auto start feature. Select custom or advanced installation and uncheck auto start option to turn off opera auto run feature.

If you find Opera auto run functionality useless and annoying, following steps will help you in disabling Opera auto start with Windows:

1. Launch Opera web browser, click on Opera Menu button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.

2. In right-side pane, scroll down to bottom and you’ll see “On Startup” section.

Under this section, you’ll find a new option to control auto start feature.

  1. “Run when my computer starts” on mine was toggled off already, but still opened a new Opera window when I woke it from Sleep or Restarted my machine.

However, “Display the start page first” under “Retain tabs from previous session” was toggled on. I toggled that off and it fixed it.

  2. OPERA GX
This article pointed me in the right direction, thank you so much.
In the GX version you’ll find it at the bottom of the very first section called simply “GX”.
It’s a long list so I overlooked it at first.
    Kudos!

  3. The “Run when my computer starts” option is not in the menu anymore. I am running Windows 11 Home 23H2. Opera came installed on the machine. Please, is there another way to make this stop opening?
    Thank you,
    Mike
