Microsoft regularly releases Windows 10 testing builds known as Insider Preview builds to people who have opted for these builds. These builds are testing builds (such as Beta, RC, etc) and may contain bugs and issues. Microsoft first tests new features in these builds and when the features are ready, these features are implemented in Windows 10 feature updates which are released to public twice a year.

In past, there were multiple development branches or release channels of Windows 10 Insider Preview builds such as Slow Ring, Fast Ring, Release Preview and Skip Ahead. First the upcoming Windows 10 feature update builds were provided for testing under Fast Ring and when they were thoroughly tested, the builds were released to Insiders under Slow Ring and then Release Preview ring. Skip Ahead was an exclusive development channel for Windows 10 which provided latest Alpha builds of Windows 10 which contained latest features under development. These builds were taken from Microsoft’s active development branch called “RS_PRERELEASE“.

A few months back, Microsoft decided to discontinue “Skip Ahead” branch and Insiders were left with only 3 development channels: Slow Ring, Fast Ring and Release Preview.

Now Microsoft has decided to revamp “Fast Ring” development branch. Microsoft will release latest Windows 10 testing builds from active development branch (RS_PRERELEASE and MN_RELEASE) to Fast Ring similar to Skip Ahead channel. These builds will contain latest features and changes under development. Remember these feature may be or not a part of upcoming Windows 10 feature updates.
