[Tip] Enable Full Dark Mode Everywhere in Incognito Mode in Google Chrome

UPDATE: The tip to enable full dark mode support everywhere given in this article will work in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers as mentioned here.

In Google Chrome web browser, when you launch Incognito Mode (private browsing mode) window by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N keys together or by using “New incognito window” option from 3-dots menu, the new Chrome window opens in Dark mode or Dark theme UI. The title bar, tab bar, toolbar, address bar, almost everything displays in dark mode in Incognito mode.

But you might have noticed that some elements such as 3-dots menu, right-click menus, dialog box, etc still use the light theme or White UI as shown in following screenshot:

It doesn’t look good and might annoy many Chrome users.

Thankfully, Chrome team has implemented full Dark Mode support in Incognito mode of Google Chrome. In newer versions of Chrome (version 91 and later), you can activate and enable full Dark theme support in Incognito mode so that everything including menus, right-click menus, etc also display using dark theme.

Following screenshot shows full Dark theme support everywhere in Incognito mode in Google Chrome:

The full dark theme support in Incognito mode is disabled by default and interested users need to manually enable it by modifying a hidden preference/flag.

If you also want to turn on native dark theme support everywhere in Incognito mode in Google Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type inherit in the “Search flags” box.

You’ll get following option:

Allow widgets to inherit native theme from its parent widget.
When enabled, secondary UI like menu, dialog etc would be in dark mode when Incognito mode is open. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

3. To activate and enable full Dark theme support in Incognito mode in Chrome, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and enabled dark theme support everywhere in Incognito mode in Chrome.

Now try to open a new window in Incognito mode and you’ll get Dark mode UI everywhere including menus.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.

  1. The extension puzzle piece menu button is back in the Chrome 91 update, and none of the old methods seem to work to get rid of it. Any suggestions?
