[Tip] Remove User Account Icon or Button from Opera Toolbar

Starting from version 89, Opera browser displays a new user account icon in its toolbar. When you click on the blue account icon, it opens a redesigned popup or flyout panel to access services such as Sync, Pinboards and VPN Pro. If you don’t like the new user account icon and want to disable or remove it from Opera toolbar, this article will help you.

Many Opera users who upgraded or installed the new Opera 89 version, noticed a brand new user account icon (some people are also referring it as avatar or user profile button) present in the toolbar.

Following screenshot shows the new user account icon showing in Opera browser’s toolbar:

This new icon has been added to provide the users easy and quick access to Sync feature along with other services such as pinboards and VPN. Users can click on the account icon and sign into their Opera account to synchronize their browsing data such as bookmarks, settings, etc across their devices.

PS: The large popup or flyout doesn’t look good in my opinion. It needs some work to make it compact.

Many Opera users are not liking it and they are complaining about this new addition. Following are some comments from Opera users taken from the official announcement page:

max1c: How do I remove the useless ugly icon from the interface?

andrew84: By the way, in my opinion, the old icon (outlined style) looks better. The new one is out of style a bit. Like the refreshed vpn popup, the refreshed account popup also reacts on default page zoom set in browser Settings (not in O Menu). So the content looks enlarged and becomes scrollable when I set 125%. I support the suggestion to hide the account icon if the sync is not used. Simply there should be a toggle (Always show account icon on toolbar) similarly to the one for ‘battery saver’.

avmon: Can the Account button be removed if sync is not used?

vegelund: No need to use valuable space for the blue profile sync icon. Sync is a feature that users either have on permanently or don’t use. Thus having this option in main menu is sufficient.

Fortunately, Opera team has provided a hidden preference/flag to remove or hide the new user account icon from Opera toolbar.

If you also want to get rid of the new user account icon in Opera browser, following steps will help you:

1. Launch Opera web browser and type opera://flags in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments“.

2. Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type account popup. It’ll show following option in the result:

Opera Account Popup

Enables Opera Account Popup – Mac, Windows, Linux

#opera-account-popup

3. To disable or remove the new user account icon from toolbar, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.

4. Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.

That’s it. You have successfully turned off the new user account icon in Opera web browser. The icon will permanently disappear from Opera toolbar and will not waste the toolbar space.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore user account icon on Opera toolbar, restore the above mentioned flag value to Default or Enabled.

  1. it didnt work, not entirely… the account icon is there as the outline which is still taking up the space, it got rid of the blue icon but the icon itself didnt actually go away, i didnt have the icon until i recently updated my opera. is there no way to remove the icon entirely??

  2. Thank you, worked perfectly. Also found a bunch of other sneaky garbage that Opera is trying to do, that I disabled the flags for while I was there.

  3. With Opera v89.0.4447.51 on Win7, the entire obnoxious icon was removed. .

    Thanks VG for the info.

  4. This worked until yesterday’s update to Opera 97.0.4719.28 Now that flag has been removed for some reason. If anyone knows how to remove the account icon in this version please let us know.

  5. So now it gets worse! Opera One has been forced upon me and I hate it! Why can’t we choose to keep the old format that we love? Opera One has changed all the sizes and positions of icons, tools, tabs, tiles etc, and AI is of no use to me and if I can’t get back the previous version I will have to look for another default browser.

  6. 100% agree with Darren! Give back the original lookout or I has to change to another browser! This rounded shapes are ugly and outdated and why there are a lot of gaps between the elements? And the ugly blue jig at the egde of the taskbar elements… !!!
