[Tip] Disable / Remove Weather Forecast Widget from Opera Speed Dial Page

The new version of Opera web browser comes with a new Weather Forecast widget/gadget on New Tab page (also known as speed dial page, homepage or start page). This new Weather widget shows current temperature of the selected city. You can select your desired city using “Set up your city” button. The weather is shown in C or F units for users.

If you remember the weather forecast widget is not a new addition. It was recently added in Opera 68 version but at that time weather forecast widget was not activated and available by default. It was hidden and we needed to add it manually by modifying a secret preference/flag. We told you how to add the weather widget on Opera speed dial page in following tutorial:

PS: If you don’t want to remove weather widget but want to change the temperature unit, you can set the Temperature Unit by selecting C or F from the drop-down box.

BONUS TIP:

You can also remove weather forecast widget using the hidden secret opera://flags page as mentioned in following steps:

1. Launch Opera web browser and type opera://flags in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments”.

2. Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type weather. It’ll show following option in the result:

Weather on Startpage
Display weather widget on startpage’s top left corner – Mac, Windows, Linux
#weather-on-startpage

3. To deactivate and disable Weather Forecast widget feature in Opera browser, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.

4. Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.

After relaunching Opera browser, check the Speed Dial page and you’ll NOT see the new Weather Forecast widget on the page.

The benefit of using opera://flags page method is that it completely removes weather forecast widget feature from Opera. Once you follow this method, it’ll remove the toggle button to show/hide weather forecast widget from Opera settings page and no one will be able to add/remove weather forecast widget on Opera speed dial page.

  1. Thank you for this helpful tip! I wish browser manufacturers would stop forcing new options on us. Tell us about them, fine…but don’t assume I want every new feature enabled. In almost all cases, I don’t. Articles like this are very much appreciated!
