[Tip] How to Disable or Remove Edge Bar from Desktop in Windows 10 and 11

Edge Bar is a new feature present in Microsoft Edge web browser. It can be used to display a new Sidebar or Search box on Desktop in Windows 10 and Windows 11. In this article, we’ll learn how to enable or disable the new Edge bar on Windows Desktop.

What is Edge Bar on Desktop?

Edge bar is a new component introduced in Microsoft Edge browser. Once enabled, it shows a sidebar or toolbar on Desktop which is pinned by default to the right-side of the computer screen. It contains a Bing search box at the top and opens default MSN homepage inside it. It also contains a few website shortcut icons such as MSN, Bing, Outlook and LinkedIn at the top of the sidebar which can be used to open the websites directly inside the Edge bar.

Following screenshot shows Edge Bar showing on Windows 11 Desktop:

How to Customize Edge Bar on Windows Desktop?

You can remove default website icons from the Edge bar by right-clicking on the icon and selecting “Remove” option. MSN and Bing icons are sticky and can’t be deleted. You can also add new website bookmarks by clicking on the “+” button and entering website URL and name.

At the bottom of the Edge bar, you get icons to select your user profiles, minimize, close, pin/unpin, auto-hide the sidebar and a 3-dots menu button to access Edge bar settings.

You can also convert the Edge bar into a floating Search box. Click on the 3-dots menu icon in Edge bar and select “Search only layout” option. It’ll remove the sidebar and will put a big Search box on the Desktop powered by Bing as shown in following screenshot:

You can disable or remove the floating icon by clicking on the 3-dots menu icon on Edge bar and unchecking “Enable floating button” option.

You can remove the Edge bar anytime by right-clicking on its icon showing in Taskbar notification area (system tray) and selecting Quit option. But it’ll automatically appear on Desktop as soon as you sign into Windows.

  1. I absolutely hate edge side bar. Please don’t make it so difficult to work out how to switch it off.

  2. When the Edge bar is running and blurring the right side of your screen, you cant see the controls. Move your cursor slowly to the bottom right, eventually you will hover, even though you cant see it, over the Close Edge bar icon. A message should pop up, confirming that if that is your desired option. Click on the icon you cant see, and it closes. Make sure you disabled the startup Edge bar button in settings, or it will come back on reboot.

  3. I thank you ever so much this is the only instructions that I was able to get back to my full screen and disable the edge bar

  4. I used the border bar a lot (on the desktop with other applications), but mine just disappeared today when I restarted the browser and (I’ve been researching this for more than 1 hour) there are no more border bar options in the settings from the edge, only those from the sidebar. Looks like microsoft did away with the edge bar to force you to use the edge browser. 🙁

  5. NONE! of the options to remove the sidebar actually works,.. it seems everytime there’s a regedit or a disable tab or ANY means of NOT using it, Microsoft disables them and forces the sidebar on,… I even tried the regedit fix once which worked,.. until the next reboot ,. and then subsequently any attempt to use the same regedit fix would fail!
