[Tip] Enable or Disable Bing Search Box on Windows 10 Desktop

Microsoft is adding a new Bing search box or search bar on Desktop in Windows 10. The new search box is added by a new version of Microsoft Edge web browser which comes preinstalled in Windows 10. This article will help you in enabling or disabling the Bing search box on Windows 10 Desktop.

New Bing Search Box Added on Desktop in Windows 10

When you update Microsoft Edge web browser to the latest version in Windows 10 and you close or minimize the web browser, a new search box is automatically added on Desktop as shown in following screenshot:

This new search box uses Microsoft Bing as default search engine and helps users in searching on the web right from the Desktop without opening the web browser. User can start typing the query inside the search box and it’ll launch the search results page in Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft started testing this new type of search box or search bar in Windows 11 Insider Preview build 25120 as a part of new lightweight interactive content feature. You can check the changelog in following exclusive article:

At that time, the search box could be enabled/disabled using the desktop context menu -> Show more options -> Show search option.

Now Microsoft has started adding the same feature to Windows 10 operating system via Microsoft Edge web browser.

How to Enable and Show Bing Search Box on Desktop in Windows 10

If you want to add and show the new Bing search box on desktop in your Windows 10 device, following steps will help you:

1. Update Microsoft Edge browser to the latest version.

2. Open Microsoft Edge and click on 3-dots main menu. Now click on More Tools option and select Launch search bar option.

PS: Microsoft is rolling out the new search box feature in phases. If you don’t see “Launch search bar” option, you’ll need to wait for some time and it’ll be enabled soon on your device.

As soon as you select “Launch search bar” option, Microsoft Edge will immediately add the Bing search box on Desktop.

You can also show the search box by pressing WIN+Shift+F keys together.

How to Disable and Remove Bing Search Box from Windows 10 Desktop

If you want to get rid of the new Bing search box from your desktop, following steps will help you:

METHOD 1: Using Search Box 3-dots Menu

1. Click on 3-dots menu showing at the right-side of the search box and select “Close search bar” option.

It’ll ask for confirmation by showing a dialog box containing following 2 options:

  • Turn off auto-launch
  • Don’t show this warning again

Select both checkbox and click on “Yes, Close” button.

Now the search box will never appear again on your Desktop.

METHOD 2: Using Search Box Icon in System Tray

1. Click on the small Edge icon in Taskbar notification area or system tray.

2. Now select “Quit” option.

You’ll get same confirmation dialog box as mentioned in METHOD 1. Select both checkbox and click on “Yes, Close” button.

That’s it. You have successfully disabled Bing search box or search bar on your desktop.

In future, if you decide to show the search box again on your Desktop, you can select the “Launch search bar” option again using Microsoft Edge web browser.

  1. I don’t get the “Turn off auto-launch” option. After “Close Box” the annoying bar just pops up again next time i open desktop.
