Windows 10 version 20H2 to be Small Service Pack Similar to 19H2

UPDATE: Windows 10 Version 20H2 (October 2020 Update) is now available for download and installation.

SUMMARY: The upcoming Windows 10 feature update will be called 20H2. Following are a few important facts about 20H2:

We know that Microsoft releases 2 feature updates for Windows 10 every year. One feature update is released in first half of the year and the other feature update is released in the second half of the year.

Feature Updates bring new features, changes and improvements to Windows 10 and upgrade the version number as well.

Microsoft has already released one feature update in the first half of 2020 which was named as “Windows 10 May 2020 Update” or 20H1. It’s also known as Windows 10 version 2004.

The next feature update is going to release in second half of this year and Microsoft has shared a few details about it.

The next feature update will be known as Windows 10 version 20H2 obviously and the official name will depend upon the releasing month. For example, if 20H2 feature update is released in November 2020, it may be called Windows 10 November 2020 Update.

The most important part about this upcoming feature update is that it’ll be a small update similar to 19H2 feature update released last year. 20H2 can be considered as a service pack for Windows 10. It seems Microsoft has decided to release a big/major feature update in first half of every year and a smaller/minor servicing feature update in second half of every year.

20H2 will be delivered via Windows Update just like a normal Windows update. It’ll be delivered using servicing technology of Windows Update which is used to deliver monthly cumulative updates.

So 20H2 will be smaller in size and will be downloaded and installed via Windows Update as a regular update.

But 20H2 will be delivered as a small update only for Windows 10 May 2020 Update users. If you are using an older version of Windows 10 i.e. older feature update, you’ll be unable to upgrade to 20H2 via Windows Update. You’ll need to perform a full installation of 20H2 by downloading and upgrading to 20H2 using official Microsoft tools or offline ISO files.

Another interesting and important fact to know about 20H2 is that it’ll come bundled with new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge web browser which means you’ll not get the legacy UWP version of Microsoft Edge in 20H2. Chromium-based Microsoft Edge will come preinstalled or built-in with 20H2 and as far as I understand, users will be unable to uninstall or remove the new Microsoft Edge.

One 20H2 becomes available for download and installation, we’ll update you.
