[Tip] Show or Hide “Try New Outlook” Toggle Option in Microsoft Outlook Titlebar

Microsoft is testing a new redesigned UI for Outlook program which is a part of Microsoft Office suite. This upcoming design UI is available as a preview and can be enabled and tested by turning on “Try the new Outlook” toggle option present in the titlebar of Outlook app. This article will help you in enabling or disabling the “Try new Outlook” toggle button in Outlook titlebar.

Following is a screenshot of the new refreshed user interface of Microsoft Outlook app:

As you can see the new Outlook UI features a Ribbon toolbar. Recently the same interface was also enabled for many Outlook web users on Outlook.com website as mentioned in following article:

The new UI of Outlook app is currently under development and testing phase and can be enabled only in Insider Preview builds of Microsoft Office. If you also want to test drive new Outlook UI, you can join the Office Insiders program using some simple steps given in following article:

How to Download and Install Microsoft Office Insider Preview Builds in Windows?

I have also seen reports that some Microsoft 365 users have also received new Outlook UI in their computers.

The new Outlook UI can be activated by enabling the “Try New Outlook” option available on the titlebar of Outlook app as shown in following screenshot:

Once you enable the option, the new UI will be activated in your Outlook app. You can disable the new Outlook UI and restore classic UI again by turning off the “Try new Outlook” option.

Now there might be 2 cases:

  • You have not received the “Try new Outlook” option in Outlook app and you want to add it to enable the new UI.
  • You have received the “Try new Outlook” option in Outlook but you want to remove the option as you don’t like the new UI.

There is a Registry tweak available to show or hide the “Try new Outlook” option in Outlook titlebar. You can follow the simple steps given below to add or remove the “Try new Outlook” option in Microsoft Outlook program:

1. Open Registry Editor using regedit command in RUN dialog box or Start Search box.

2. Go to following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General

In right-side pane, create a new DWORD with the name HideNewOutlookToggle and set its value to 1 to hide the “Try new Outlook” option or set the value to 0 to show the toggle option in Outlook titlebar.

  1. I made the RegEdit change but I don’t see the toggle. Should be obvious up in the title bar somewhere? I’m running Microsoft Outlook for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2210 Build 16.0.15726.20070) 64-bit

  2. I am experiencing the same issue as Phil above.

    I have Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2211 Build 16.0.15831.20098) 32-bit

  3. The New Outlook is AWFUL. I WILL NEVER USE IT.

Please IMMEDIATELY Stop trying to forcing me into “Try New Outlook”.

  4. Nice article but the reality is at Microsoft it’s just college grads sitting around with nothing to do other than to change the UI all around FOR NO REASON. Stop breaking user familiarity. People want FAMILIARITY AND PRODUCTIVITY NOT “CHANGE.”

  5. Hello Microsoft! Do you EVER listen to the users who PAY $ for your software which is not subscription so you make even more? Anon said it best.

  6. Tried it, did not like it and they had got rid of (sticky) notes which I use a lot.

  7. How do you add / remove buttons in the new outlook ribbon? I want to hide the buttons I don’t use and add ones I use. A clean interface is fine but let us easily adapt the UI to our work flow. That includes hiding distractions you are proud of that we hate.

  8. Note that u may have to create New->Key “General” under HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \Office \ 16.0 \ Outlook \ Options\
(I did on W11.Pro anyway). But thanks immensely for the solution.

  9. Thank you, this worked for me. Had a bunch of users today either click on the new Outlook toggle themselves or forced in to it. Either way no one liked it and most were missing/weren’t finding features they use constantly.

  10. Relative to: NOTES.
Notes has not gone away. It is now located in the list of files such as “Inbox”, “Sent”, etc. rather than a separate pop up activated by clicking the box on the far left menu.

  11. How do you get rid of the toggle in the Mail client ‘Windows Mail’ built into Windows 10 ?

  12. Tried it for a considerable time, but I don’t like it. Some things I don’t like:

    • Single click to open (I like to select messages using a single click and double-click to open messages).
    • Assigned categories always show ahead of the subject.
    • Very little customization, particularly on the message list.
    • Favorites are in the same window pane as the rest of the folders, meaning they scroll together.

  13. Anon’s comment of 4-12-23 is spot on.
Made worse as one has to add a Registry entry to make “it” go away. Poor form.

  14. The new outlook feature is not compatible with some of the other software, like MS Teams with the outlook calendar. Its is very annoying with those new features. Why is it they have to mess with something that is not broken?

  15. The new calendar is horrible and I am trying to change it back but I don’t have the toggle bar and I don’t have “Options” in the registry.

  16. Where has this functionality in the New Outlook gone. not enterprise business friendly.

Won’t mark e-mail as read once pop out read window

Can’t copy e-mail and paste as attachment in another e-mail

Can’t edit message ie. to add additional information

  17. Thank You!

Also new outlook is terrible and ruins integration with every other office app. I can’t stress how bad the integration is with onenote. It’s almost like they want us to stop using office services.
