Recently I posted about the addition of new redesigned Ribbon toolbar in my old Hotmail account. When I opened outlook.com website and signed into my email account, I noticed a new Ribbon toolbar displaying at the top of the page as shown in following screenshot:

Following article contains details about the new Ribbon toolbar addition to Outlook.com website accounts page:

Microsoft Outlook Website Getting Redesigned Ribbon Toolbar

It was a new feature called “Outlook Simplified and Classic Ribbons” and now it seems Microsoft has started adding the new Ribbon toolbar to all Outlook.com email account users. Many AskVG readers have shared comments about the addition of Ribbon toolbar to their email accounts and many of them are not happy with the new Ribbon UI.

Actually Microsoft has not provided any option to hide or remove the new Ribbon toolbar. Since the new toolbar takes lots of screen space, many users are not liking it and want to disable the Ribbon toolbar.

Fortunately, there is a workaround available to temporarily hide or remove the Ribbon toolbar from Outlook account page which we are going to share in this article.

NOTE: This is a temporary solution and if you reload Outlook.com page or re-open the webpage later, the Ribbon toolbar will appear again and you’ll need to follow the steps again.

If you also want to get rid of the new Ribbon toolbar from your Outlook.com account page, following steps will help you:

1. Once you open your Outlook account page, right-click on empty area on Ribbon toolbar and select “Inspect” or “Inspect Element” option. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+Shift+C keys together.

It’ll open Developer Console pane in right-sidebar in your web browser.

2. Now in “Elements” or “Inspector” tab in Console, paste following code in Search HTML box given below the Inspector/Elements tab:

data-app-section

Press Enter key and it’ll direct jump to the code responsible to display the Ribbon toolbar which is as following:

<div class="HIqgw n0tDR" tabindex="-1" role="region" data-app-section="Ribbon" aria-label="Ribbon">

3. Right-click on the above mentioned code and select Delete Node or Delete Element option.

That’s it. It’ll immediately remove the Ribbon toolbar from your Outlook account page.

PS: This trick works temporarily for the current session only. If you re-open the website, you’ll need to follow the steps again.

BONUS TIP:

Once you remove Ribbon toolbar, you might be unable to write or compose new email as the button is only available on Ribbon toolbar. Don’t worry! You can use press N key to compose new email if you have enabled keyboard shortcuts. If keyboard shortcuts are not enabled in your Outlook account, you can enable them using following steps:

  • Click on Settings (Cog wheel) icon present at the top-right corner on your Outlook account page.
  • Now click on “View all Outlook Settings” link given at the bottom of Settings sidebar.
  • On General section, go to Accessibility tab and enable Keyboard shortcuts option.
  • Click on Save button and you’re done.

  1. Expanding on the above fine article, if you just want to adjust the vertical dimension of the ribbon to make it less obtrusive, or more so: There is a small downward facing caret symbol (a “dropdown caret”) at the far far right end of the ribbon, a little below your personal photo/logo, to the right of the three dots (a.k.a. vertical ellipsis/hamburger). My caret is grayed-out, easy to overlook. Press this caret and you will be given a choice as to the vertical dimension of the ribbon. This is for my web-based screen for Hotmail, which I access at Outlook.com.

  2. My Outlook 365 puts the ribbon (showing options for Home, View, Help, etc.) right on top of the Subject line in my new email. How can I move it up to be off of my email??? I haven’t seen this question anywhere else. [It won’t let me add a screenshot.] When I create an email, then try to send, it gives me “No subject” warning. The only way that I can add a subject is to get out of the email which puts it in draft. Then select from the draft list.
