Although we can permanently turn off WhatsApp notifications using its Settings or Apps settings page in our mobile phone Settings but it’ll completely disable all WhatsApp notifications and we’ll be unable to get notifications for important messages such as office messages, etc.

Many times you may want to disable notifications for certain groups or person. For example, you are subscribed to a friend, family or news group and you don’t want to receive notifications for new messages in those groups. You just want to occasionally visit those groups to check new messages. Getting frequent notifications from these groups may annoy you while doing important work or watching videos, playing games in your mobile phone.

Similarly you may want to block notifications for some people who just share news and jokes with you, nothing important stuff.

WhatsApp allows users to disable or mute notifications for specific groups or person. Once you mute notifications for a group or person, you’ll not see new message notifications for them. Other notifications will keep showing without any issue.

In this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to disable or mute notifications for desired WhatsApp group or contact. This tutorial will work for both Android as well as iOS.

In past, WhatsApp used to allow users to mute notifications for 8 hours, 1 week or 1 year and after that time the notifications were automatically unmuted.

Now newer versions of WhatsApp allow users to mute chat notifications forever. Now you can disable new message notifications for always for certain groups and contacts.

PS: If you want to just mute the sound but want to get notification pop-ups for new messages, you can select “Show notifications” option.

That’s it. WhatsApp will mute or disable notifications for selected group or contact and you’ll never receive new chat message notifications for those groups or contacts.

You can select many groups and contacts at once and disable notifications for all of them in a single step.

NOTE: In future, if you decide to unmute or enable notifications for a group or contact, again tap and hold on the group or contact chat and tap on UNMUTE (Volume) icon showing in WhatsApp toolbar. It’ll turn on notifications for those groups or contacts.
