[Tip] How to Select and Delete All Chat Messages in Bulk in WhatsApp

Recently an AskVG reader contacted me and asked following question regarding famous Instant Messenger (chat) app WhatsApp for smartphones:

Hi. I’m using WhatsApp in my Android mobile phone. I have joined lots of groups and there are so many messages lying in all groups. Now I want to empty them and delete all existing messages in those groups. When I tried to delete messages, I found that I need to select all messages one by one and then I’ll be able to delete all of them. I have 1000+ messages and it’ll take huge time in selecting them one by one. Someone told me that I’ll need to exit or leave the group to be able to delete all messages in single step. But I don’t want to leave or exit those groups. Those groups are very important to me. I want to delete all messages in one step. Is there no way to delete all messages in bulk without selecting them one by one? Thanks a lot in advance.

Yes. There is a way to delete all messages in bulk in WhatsApp. When you select a chat message in WhatsApp group or personal chat, WhatsApp allows you to select more messages but one by one. There is no “Select All” option provided to select all messages in one go. In my opinion, WhatsApp should add a “Select All” messages option as soon as possible in upcoming versions of the app.

Many times we want to delete all messages present in a group or a personal chat in WhatsApp. Many people don’t know that WhatsApp allows users to empty whole group chat or personal chat without any need of selecting all messages separately or leaving/exiting the groups.

If you also want to select and delete all chat messages in bulk in WhatsApp groups without leaving or exiting them or in personal one-to-one chats, following steps will help you:

1. Open WhatsApp and open the group or personal chat which you want to empty i.e. delete all messages.

2. Now tap on 3-dots menu (More options menu) present at the top-right corner and select More option.

3. You’ll get few options such as Media, Clear chat, Export chat and Add shortcut under More menu. Tap on Clear Chat option to delete all chat messages in bulk.

WhatsApp will show a confirmation message:

Are you sure you want to clear messages in this chat?

[ ] Delete media from my phone

[CANCEL] [CLEAR]

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to delete all photos, videos, audio clips, documents, links, etc shared in the group or personal chat, select “Delete media from my phone” option. If you want to keep the media stored in your mobile phone, make sure to uncheck i.e. deselect the option.

4. Now tap on “CLEAR” button.

That’s it. All chat messages will be immediately removed from the chat and the group or personal chat will be still present and shown in WhatsApp list.
