[Tip] Enable Confirmation on Closing Microsoft Edge with Multiple Tabs Opened

Microsoft Edge version 104 and later come with a new feature which allows users to enable or restore a confirmation or warning prompt before closing the window with multiple tabs. If you want to enable the confirmation window on close, this article will help you.

Many times when we are working on multiple tabs in our web browser and we accidentally click on Close (x) button present in the titlebar of the browser or press ALT+F4 keys, it closes the browser and we lose all opened tabs.

Some web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Opera come with a very useful feature called “Warn on Close” (also known as Warn on Exit or Warn on Quit). This feature shows a warning message or confirmation dialog box if the user tries to close the browser with multiple tabs opened. Once the user confirms the action, the browser closes. If the user accidentally clicked on the Close button, he can click on the Cancel or similar button present on the confirmation box and the browser will remain opened.

In older versions of Microsoft Edge, it was possible to enable confirmation on closing the browser. We just needed to enable a hidden preference/flag to activate the feature. Following article contains the required steps applicable to older versions of Microsoft Edge:

[Tip] Enable Warning Message on Closing Multiple Tabs in Microsoft Edge (No longer works)

Unfortunately, Microsoft removed the flag in newer versions of Edge so the trick stopped working.

The good news is that Microsoft has added the confirmation feature back to Edge. Starting from Microsoft Edge 104 version, the confirmation or warning on closing multiple tabs feature is available on Settings page of Microsoft Edge.

If you also want to enable or restore warning message / confirmation prompt on closing Microsoft Edge with multiple tabs running, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar. Now select Settings option from the main menu.

Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page.

You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

2. Now go to Appearance tab and in right-side pane, scroll down to bottom and look for following option present under “Customize browser” section:

Ask before closing a window with multiple tabs

This option is disabled or turned off by default which means Microsoft Edge will not warn on closing the browser with multiple tabs opened.

To force Microsoft Edge to display a warning or confirmation box upon closing it with multiple tabs running, set the option to ON i.e. enable the option.

That’s it. Now whenever you have opened more than one tab in Microsoft Edge and you try to close the browser, it’ll ask for confirmation before exiting.

PS: The same option “Ask before closing a window with multiple tabs” is also present under Settings -> Accessibility -> Make Microsoft Edge easier to use section.

NOTE: The confirmation box contains a “Don’t ask me again” checkbox which can be enabled to disable the warning box before closing with multiple tabs. If you enabled the option to remove the confirmation feature and later you decide to restore the confirmation again, follow the above mentioned steps again.

  1. Since the latest Edge update in August 2022, this setting, even though turned on, does not bring up the prompt to confirm one wants to close all tabs if Edge is closed using the “X” top right or Alt+F4. It only works using the 3 dots and “Close Microsoft Edge” at the bottom of the menu.

Is there a Registry trick that can be applied to W10 Home or Pro or a Group Policy change for W10 Pro that will bring this function back?
