[Bug] Microsoft Edge No Longer Confirms on Closing Multiple Tabs

Microsoft Edge latest version 105.0.1343.27 contains a bug which breaks the confirmation or warning feature on closing multiple tabs in the browser window.

Confirmation on Close Feature in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge comes with a built-in functionality which can be enabled to get a warning or confirmation box if the user tries to close the browser window with multiple tabs opened or running.

Many users like me turn on the useful feature so that if we accidentally click on “Close (X)” button in the titlebar or press ALT+F4 keys, we don’t lose all running tabs. Microsoft Edge shows a confirmation prompt to ask whether we want to close the window or not. If we accidentally clicked on the Close button, we can click on Cancel button given in the warning box and Microsoft Edge will not exit and we’ll not lose our opened tabs.

This confirmation prompt can be enabled or disabled using Edge Settings page. We just need to toggle the “Ask before closing a window with multiple tabs” option present under “Customize browser” section on Appearance tab.

[BUG] Microsoft Edge doesn’t Confirm on Closing Multiple Tabs

Recently Edge team released a new update 105.0.1343.27 for Microsoft Edge browser and it seems this update breaks the confirmation feature in Edge.

After installing the latest update, if a user clicks on Close button in Edge window while running multiple tabs, the browser immediatelly exits without showing any confirmation dialog box.

The issue was confirmed by an AskVG reader “Anonymous (@fbro01)” at Twitter. The reader is also facing the same issue after updating Edge to the latest version.

Another reader “Bruce Hayward” also posted a comment regarding same issue:

Since the latest Edge update in August 2022, this setting, even though turned on, does not bring up the prompt to confirm one wants to close all tabs if Edge is closed using the “X” top right or Alt+F4. It only works using the 3 dots and “Close Microsoft Edge” at the bottom of the menu.

Is there a Registry Hack that can be applied to W10 Home or Pro or a Group Policy change for W10 Pro that will bring this function back?

The confirmation box never appears even if the user has enabled the above mentioned option in Edge Settings page.

So if you are also facing this strange and annoying bug in Edge browser, you are not alone.

We should hope Microsoft will fix the bug via a minor update for Microsoft Edge browser.

  1. I remove this warning, beacause I know, whether I am closing a tab or the browser itself.
If I want to be sure to not accidentially close the whole browser, I open a second browser session in parallel. We should not exaggerate with requests !

  2. Multi-billion dollar company can’t even do a simple update without making a mess of things. I’ve lost tabs that I was working on… for HOURS!! Thanks a lot!! This was a problem even on Edge’s release where you couldn’t reset the warning if you, heaven forbid, unchecked and closed the window too fast where it was lost forever. “You could reinstall edge” you say? NOPE, you had to reinstall windows because edge was so integrated that Microsoft wouldn’t let you do that.

  3. I am also having this bug issue when clicking on the X to close it don’t bring up if I want to close all the tabs for closing the Microsoft edge. MICROSOFT you are starting to act like a virus now. I can’t trust Microsoft anymore. No wonder my antivirus software warns me before install any Microsoft software and updates and tells me it is a virus good job very childish.

  4. That really S**ked.
What a huge pain in the *ss!
I bet Microsoft did it to be mean. They obviously do not believe in Karma.
