[Tip] Disable or Remove Firefox Account Sync Feature in Mozilla Firefox

Firefox Account previously known as Firefox Sync is a built-in feature of Mozilla Firefox web browser which allows users to automatically sync various items such as bookmarks, login passwords, options, etc among different computers and devices.

You just need to create a new Firefox account to use the sync feature and then you can select which items should be synced on the cloud. You can sync following items using this feature:

  • Bookmarks
  • Open tabs
  • Logins
  • History
  • Add-ons
  • Options

Once you start using this feature on a device, you can use the same Firefox account on a different machine to restore all the synced items. So its a handy feature of Firefox to use same bookmarks, add-ons, preferences, etc on your multiple devices.

You can access Firefox Account Sync feature using the main Firefox menu (hamburger menu) or using “Firefox Account” tab present on Options/Preferences page.

But if you don’t want to use this feature due to privacy issues or safety concerns, you may want to disable or remove this feature from the browser.

Older versions of Firefox browser didn’t provide any option to disable or remove the sync feature but the new Firefox 60.0 and later versions come with a built-in option to completely disable or remove Firefox Account and sync feature as shown in following images:

If you are using Firefox 60.0 or later versions, you can disable Firefox Account sync feature using the hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button.

2. Now type fxaccounts.enabled in Search filter box and it’ll show following preference in the window:

identity.fxaccounts.enabled

3. This preference is set to true by default i.e. enabled. To disable the feature, double-click on identity.fxaccounts.enabled preference and change its value to false. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.

That’s it. Now it’ll completely disable Firefox Account sync feature and will remove the option from main Firefox menu as well as from Options/Preferences page.

PS: If you decide to enable the feature again in future, just set the above mentioned preference to true again.

  1. Finally after the last couple days I can now resume opening my email. Did not know why I could not open Gmail until I discovered the sync icon. I do not want sync so it’s my hope that google will continue to allow me use of my email thru firefox.

Apparently the present crew at Google have never heard an old adage that goes like this:
Never put all your “eggs” in one basket!

  2. Thanks for this helpful article, that sync nag screen needs to be gone for good, felt like a virus or worse creeped into my (hitherto) beloved browser. If I need to sync (besides I don’t even own a smartphone, just a couple of autonomous mostly offline PCs) I’ll come begging for it, but it should never be the other way around. Nearly put me off from continuing to use Phirephox altogether but I guess I’m good now. Or at least better. Very helpful thank you.
