What is Firefox Account Icon?

This new Firefox Account icon (also known as User Profile or Browser Profile icon) represents the built-in Sync feature present in Firefox browser. The Sync feature can be used to synchronize bookmarks/favorites, browser history, tabs, passwords, add-ons/extensions, preferences across all devices.

You just need to create a Firefox Account if you don’t have already and then sign in using your Firefox Account in Firefox and it’ll start syncing your account data with Firefox servers. Now if you sign in using same Firefox Account in other devices, your browser data will become available on those devices as well. So you can use same bookmarks, history, add-ons, settings, etc in all your computers, mobile phones, etc using Sync feature in Firefox.

The Sync feature becomes also useful if you want to format and clean install Windows or other operating system in your computer. Just sign in using Firefox Account and sync your browser data before formatting your PC and after fresh Windows installation, again sign in using same Firefox Account in Firefox and it’ll restore all your browser data and you can start using Firefox without any need to setup it again from scratch.

Why was Firefox Account Icon Added to Toolbar?

The new Firefox Account icon has been added to Firefox toolbar to make Firefox users aware about the built-in Sync feature. It’ll also help users in understanding the status of Sync feature quickly and easily. Users just need to take a glance over the new icon and they’ll be able to know whether the Sync feature is working or not in Firefox.

For example, if the icon shows black user avatar with white background, it means you are not using Sync feature and you are not signed in using Firefox Account. Similarly, if the icon shows white user avatar with black background, it means you are using Sync feature and you are signed in using Firefox Account.

Users can also perform several tasks by clicking on Firefox Account icon in toolbar such as send tabs to devices, connect more devices, manage Firefox Account, change sync settings and manually sync account.

  1. You mention of the color usage in the icon are incorrect. The colors you mention apply to the default appearance of Firefox. If you use the Dark Mode, the colors are reversed with dark user on white circle background indicating that you are logged in.

  2. This only removes the icon until you close Firefox. As soon as you open it again, the button is back and you have to manually remove it again.

  3. ^^ For me it remains removed. I tried to remove the icon, closed Firefox and relaunched it and the icon didn’t appear again.

  4. Doesn’t work at all. I have latest version of quantum (Nov. 22/2019) and if i right-click i just get “Hide all Toolbars” (already checked).
This is just one of dozens, maybe hundreds of similar frustrations.
I know why Chrome beats Firefox (aside from Google stacking deck against FF)- if it ain’t simple and easy, people avoid it. Firefox, bless it, is often a PITA.
Why oh why doesn’t Mozilla focus on basics first (build in a bulk downloader, a working zoom-to-fit and zoom page etc etc)? That’s why Opera died- you’d think they would’ve have taken note of that grim fact.

  5. “For example, if the icon shows black user avatar with white background, it means you are not using Sync feature and you are not signed in using Firefox Account. Similarly, if the icon shows white user avatar with black background, it means you are using Sync feature and you are signed in using Firefox Account.”

Wrong .. it is the other way around on my system? [… realized after loosing over an hour of organizing bookmarks!!]
