[Windows Fix] When You Right-Click on Desktop, Context Menu Freezes or Takes Longer Time to Display

Today we are going to talk about a very irritating issue which can be found in any version of Windows whether its the good ol’ Windows XP or the latest Windows 10 operating system. All Windows users (Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10) might face this issue.

Some people consider it as a bug or problem in Windows operating system but it’s not!

The issue occurs when you right-click on Desktop and might also occur when you right-click inside Windows Explorer (also known as My Computer or This PC). The context menu (right-click menu) takes a lot of time in appearing. Sometimes when the user right-clicks, the OS freezes for a few seconds and then it starts working again.

So basically the issue occurs when you right-click on Desktop and the context menu takes longer time in displaying.

Let me tell you, it’s not a fault of the operating system. This problem happens because some unwanted and unnecessary options are forcefully added to the context menu. These problematic options are added by the graphics card driver software such as nVidia, AMD Radeon, Intel, MSI, ATI, etc.

Actually when you install Windows operating system, it downloads and installs the required drivers for the hardware such as graphics card from Windows Update so that the hardware can function properly. Sometimes the user manually installs the drivers using the disc provided by the PC manufacturer company.

If you purchase a branded computer, it already comes with Windows installed and it also contains all required hardware drivers.

When the graphics card driver is installed either by Windows Update or manually by the user, the driver software automatically adds some extra options to the Desktop context menu (right-click menu).

For example, following image shows the desktop right-click menu containing graphics card options labeled as “Graphics Properties”, “Graphics Options” and “AMD Radeon Settings”:

These options names differ for different brand graphics cards. You may see “NVIDIA Control Panel”, etc option names for other brand graphics cards in the context menu.

These extra options in the context menu are the actual culprit. These options cause the right-click context menu to freeze or to take longer time to display.

Don’t worry! The problem can be solved by removing these extra unwanted options from the context menu.

A long time back in good ol’ Windows XP days, we posted a tutorial to get rid of these annoying extra graphics card driver options from the context menu. You can find the tutorial at following link:

The method given in above mentioned tutorial works in all Windows versions and we have also updated the tutorial with new images and information.

It requires a simple registry tweak to remove the graphics card options from the right-click context menu. As soon as you delete the required key from Registry, it’ll immediately remove the graphics card options from the context menu.

Now whenever you right-click on Desktop or inside Windows Explorer, the context menu will instantly appear and will never freeze or take longer time.

  1. I don’t believe it’s fair to say “It’s not the operating system’s fault”. There’s nothing difficult about having the OS check some text file for what it needs in the context menu, and have that show up instantly. It definitely still qualifies as an OS bug.

  2. This was a huge help, thank you so much for sharing!

Also, I agree with Anonymous here. If checking a short text field causes what feels like the spinning wheel of death something’s not working right.

    Thanks again!

  3. Sorry, not true. I removed AMD graphic options but the problem is still tehere.

  6. I am sitting here wondering how long it will take for MSE to update the virus and spyware definitions. Seems to be taking a very long time.
When you update these definitions does MSE run the app and check your system?
