[Opera Tip] Disable Scroll to Top of Web Page by Clicking on Active Tab Feature

Opera web browser comes with a very useful feature which is called quick scroll to the top of the page. If you have opened a web page in Opera and you have scrolled down on the web page, you can click on its tab present in the tab bar to quickly scroll to the top of the web page. If you click on the tab again, it’ll let you go to the previous scroll position.

This feature is quite handy but many Opera users requested the Opera team to provide an option to turn on/off this feature. Many times users accidentally click on the tab and Opera scrolls the web page to the top. Users need to click on the tab again to restore the web page to the previous position. If it happens regularly, it may annoy the users.

Opera listened to the users feedback and requests and they added a built-in option to enable/disable scroll to the top feature in newer Opera versions.

If you are using Opera web browser and want to disable or customize scroll to the top feature, following steps will help you:

1. Launch Opera web browser, click on Opera Menu button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.

2. Now scroll down to bottom on settings page and click on “Advanced” link. It’ll show advanced settings options.

3. Again scroll down and navigate to “User Interface” section.

4. To disable scroll to the top of the web page feature, set the option “Scroll to the top of the page by clicking the active tab” to OFF.

That’s it. Now Opera will never scroll to the top of any web page if you click on its tab.

  1. I am having issues with some websites jumping to the top when I move my cursor to the task bar to open other programs. What can be done to STOP this

  2. When I use Opera, often I wish to click double click to open an url, but it brings two tabs. How to change from single click to double click?
I use double click in other browsers to open. Any idea?
    Thanks.

  3. This is the most annoying feature I’ve ever seen. I like keeping my things organized and I like to switch tabs leaving them exactly where they are. I don’t care that you have some stupid costumers like elderly women who fail to manage to scroll to the top all by time by themselves, this feature is literally something that makes Opera fail as a browser, please don’t f**k this up again by making unnecessary changes into default.

  4. How can the auto scrolling to the top of the speed dial page be disabled. I use the latest speed dial entries at the bottom of the page and if I want to look at another link close to the last one I opened, I have to quickly move the cursor to the bottom of the scroll bar to keep it at the bottom of the page.

  5. Could there be an option to stop going back to top of the speed dial page, but staying on the location from where you were before you went to a web site. Often I am looking for a recent web site at the bottom of speed dial and if I select the wrong one it goes from the bottom of the page to the top and I have to drag the page back to the bottom to click on another saved bookmark. Since I might be looking for a bookmark in the middle of the speed dial, I have printed a 1 foot ruler and taped on the right side of my monitor so I can remember the location on the ruler to be able to go back to the same location I was at before I clicked on the wrong bookmark. This would be a super option to add to Opera.
