[Fix] “You Won’t be Signed Out of Your Google Account” Message in Google Chrome

When you sign in to a website (such as email website, social networking website, online forums, etc) using your web browser, one or more cookies are automatically created by your web browser to store your login information. These cookies are created to stay you logged in to all websites so that you don’t need to enter your account credentials (username and password) every time you visit those websites.

Many times people clear these cookies stored by the web browser for privacy and security issues. For example, you used a public or friend’s computer to sign into some websites. After finishing your work, you may want to clear all cookies created by the browser so that no other person can access your account in those websites.

When you clear cookies stored by the web browser, it automatically sign you out from all websites. Now if someone opens a website accessed by you, he’ll not be able to use your account. He’ll need to enter the login credentials again.

Every web browser provides options to clear cookies. We have posted a tutorial in past which lets you know how to clear cache and cookies in all web browsers. You can visit the tutorial at following link:

[Tip] How to Clear / Delete Cache and Cookies in Your Web Browser

You just need to press Ctrl+Shift+Delete keys together in your web browser and it’ll show the clear browsing history window where you can select cookies option to remove them from your web browser.

If you are using Google Chrome web browser and you tried to clear cache and cookies in Chrome, you might have noticed following message in the clear browsing data window:

(You won’t be signed out of your Google Account)

Following screenshot shows this message in Google Chrome web browser:

If you click on the “Clear Data” button, it removes all cookies except the cookies created by Google to store your Google Account information.

In other words, if you clear all cookies in Google Chrome, it doesn’t delete Google Account cookies and you remain signed in to Google services in your web browser.

Reason Behind This Error Message

It happens due to the new Identity Consistency feature (also known as sign-in link) introduced in Google Chrome newer versions. If you sign into Gmail or other Google services such as Google+ or YouTube, Google Chrome automatically signs you into local user account which is used by Chrome for various tasks such as sync, etc.

Since your Google Account information has been used by Chrome to sign you into local user account, Google Chrome keeps the Google auth cookies created by Google Account to keep you signed in.

That’s why you get the message “You won’t be signed out of your Google Account” while trying to clear cookies. Google Chrome alerts you that clearing cookies will not sign you out from your Google Account. It’ll keep those cookies to store your Google Account information.

How to Fix This Error Message?

First of all, if you don’t want Chrome to use your Google Account information to sign you into local user account, you’ll need to disable the Identity Consistency feature. Following tutorial tells you how to disable this new feature:

[Fix] Google Chrome Automatically Signs into Browser When You Log into Gmail or Other Google Services

Once you follow the steps given in above tutorial, Chrome will stop automatically signing you into local user account.

Now you’ll need to manually sign out from local user account. To sign out from Chrome’s local user account, click on the user picture/avatar icon present near the 3-dots button present on the top-right corner the toolbar. It’ll show your account information. Click on the down arrow given next to your account name and email ID and click on “Sign out” option.

That’s it. It’ll sign you out from local user account. Now try to clear cookies in Chrome and you’ll no longer receive the “You won’t be signed out of your Google Account” message.

Now Google Chrome will clear all cookies and will not prevent you from deleting your Google Account cookies.

PS: Google Chrome 70 and later versions automatically clear all cookies by default and don’t show “You won’t be signed out of your Google Account” message.
