[Opera Tip] Disable Sponsored Content on Speed Dials Page and Bookmarks Bar

If you use Opera web browser, you might have noticed 3rd party websites links on speed dials page and bookmarks bar. When you launch Opera browser or open a new tab, Opera shows the default speed dials page (also known as start page or new tab page) where some sponsored content are shown from Opera partner companies such as amazon, ebay, etc.

Similarly some 3rd party websites shortcuts are also displayed on bookmarks bar. If you delete these unnecessary and extra speed dials and bookmarks, Opera automatically adds them again after some time.

Following screenshot shows these sponsored speed dials and bookmarks in Opera web browser:

In older versions of Opera, it was not possible to disable these sponsored content and advertisements on speed dials page and bookmarks bar but fortunately newer versions of Opera come with built-in option to get rid of these annoying ads and suggestions.

If you are also using Opera and want to permanently remove sponsored content from speed dials page and bookmarks bar, following steps will help you:

1. Launch Opera web browser, click on Opera Menu button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.

2. Now scroll down to bottom on settings page and click on “Advanced” link. It’ll show advanced settings options.

3. Again scroll down and navigate to “Start Page” section.

4. To disable sponsored content, set the option “Receive promoted Speed Dials and Bookmarks” to OFF.

You can also set the “Show Speed Dial suggestions” option to OFF.

That’s it. Now Opera will no longer add any unwanted sponsored content and suggestions on speed dials page and bookmarks bar. You can safely remove existing sponsored content from start page and bookmarks bar. Opera will never restore them.

  1. Sorry but while both “ads” options were always disabled, with the latest version 64 update, Amazon ads populate the Start Page screen.

  2. Yes, now every time I look at something in Amazon, it appears in Speed Dial as a button with the item and “Keep Shopping”. I remove it and sometimes it goes away for good, other times it comes back.

  3. opera mini opens random web pages continuously , it disturbs my work . any solution for this? please suggest.

  4. These options aren’t available in all versions of Opera. No way to turn these off on my tablet, for example.

  5. Just tried it. Hope unwanted ads will disappear. I remove them all the time and they come back ugh. Very annoying. I may change browser if it continue but for now I really hope it’ll work out.
