AI-Powered Features that are Available in Google Chrome 121 and Later

Last week on January 17, 2024, we posted about the newer 121.0 version of Google Chrome web browser released to selected Early Stable users. At that time, Google mentioned about some new GenAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence) features introduced in Chrome 121 version but didn’t provide any detail or information about these new AI tools.

On January 23, 2024, Google released the same Chrome 121 version to all users on stable channel and the company also officially announced about the new GenAI features. Chrome 121 and later versions come with following 4 new AI features bundled:

  • Tab organizer
  • Create themes with AI
  • Help me write
  • GenAI local foundational model

Tab Organizer is an AI-powered tool in Chrome that automatically creates tab groups based on user’s open tabs. It also suggests the user to create tab groups based on the URLs and titles of opened websites. To access and use the Tab organizer, users can right-click on a tab and select “Organize similar tabs” option from the context menu. The same AI feature can also be accessed using the Tab Search (drop-down arrow) button present on the left-side of the tab bar or titlebar.

Create Themes with AI feature is a customization tool that helps users in creating custom themes and wallpapers for Chrome using a preset list of options. To use this AI feature, users can click on “Customize Chrome” button present on the New Tab Page (NTP) and then select “Change theme -> Create with AI” option present on the side panel.

Help Me Write is an AI-based writing assistant tool to write short-form content on websites. It suggests content based on prompts entered by the user and the current content of the web page. To use this AI feature, right-click inside a text box or text field present on any website and select “Help me write” option. As soon as you start typing a few words, the AI will start the writing process.

How to Enable AI-Powered Features and Tools in Google Chrome

These new AI-powered features and tools are currently available to a limited set of Chrome users in the US only. The user must be 18 years old and signed-in using Google account. Enterprise and educational managed users will have no access to these AI features. To use Tab Organizer AI feature, the sync feature should also be turned on in Chrome and the history option is enabled for automatic sync.

To enable and access these new experimental AI features, eligible users in the U.S. can sign into Chrome, open Chrome settings page, go to Experimental AI page and turn on the desired AI feature given under “Try out experimental AI features” section.

All AI features will be rolled out to all users and regions in coming months and future versions of Google Chrome web browser. Also many more AI-powered features will be added in future versions of the web browser.

AI Features and Tools in Chrome Collect and Send Relevant Data to Google

According to Google, these AI features are enabled by default to eligible users and send relevant data to Google to help train or improve AI models. Relevant data may include prompts, inputs, outputs, and source materials, depending on the feature. It may be reviewed by humans for the sole purpose of improving AI models.

Due to the data collection, many Chrome users might decide to disable these new features. Similarly, some users might not find the new AI-powered features useful and might see these new features as bloatware.

How to Disable or Modify AI Features and Tools in Google Chrome

If you also don’t like the new AI features, you can completely disable or remove them using Chrome policies mentioned below.

Chrome team has provided official policies which can be implemented to permanently deactivate or customize all extra AI-based tools and services in Chrome browser.

Following steps will help you in getting rid of all AI features from Google Chrome web browser:

STEP 1: Press WIN+R key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

STEP 2: Now go to any of following keys:

If you want to disable the new AI-powered features for all Windows users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies

If you want to disable the new AI-powered features for current user only:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies

STEP 3: Under Policies key, create a new key and set its name to Google

STEP 4: Again under Google key, create a new key and set its name to Chrome

So the final key path will be one of following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

STEP 5: Now select Chrome key and in right-side pane, create following DWORD values to disable or modify desired AI-powered feature in Chrome:

TabOrganizerSettings – To disable or modify Tab Organizer AI feature

CreateThemesSettings – To disable or modify Create Themes with AI feature

HelpMeWriteSettings – To disable or modify Help Me Write AI feature

To create the above mentioned DWORDs, right-click on empty area and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” option.

STEP 6: Now set the new DWORD values as following:

Change all DWORD value to 2 to completely disable the AI feature.

The default value is 0 which enables the AI feature and sends relevant data to Google.

If you change the value to 1, it’ll keep the AI feature enabled but will disable the data collection and Chrome will no longer send any data to Google to train or improve AI models.

NOTE: To disable the new GenAI local foundational model, create a new DWORD GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings and set its value to 1.

Download following ZIP file, extract it using 7-Zip or other file archive utilities and run the extracted REG files:

The script file will ask for confirmation, accept it.

  1. You have forgotten the DevToolsGenAiSettings registry key, which is in Chrome 124 beta.

  2. This is FAR to complicated for a normal user. That being said THANK YOU for providing the information.
These software companies need to be called to task for these types of add on applications. We as users should be able to DECIDE FOR OURSELVES if we want these installed on OUR systems. It is far to accepted that these software makers now OWN our devices and we have no power over them.
