[Fix] Your Browser is Managed by Your Organization in Google Chrome

If you are using Google Chrome web browser and suddenly Chrome started showing “Your browser is managed by your organization” message to you, this tutorial will help you in fixing the issue and getting rid of this error message.

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

When you open the main Chrome app menu (3-dots menu), you see “Managed by your organization” message at the bottom of the menu as shown in following screenshot:

Managed_By_Your_Organization_Message_Google_Chrome.png

Also if you open Chrome Settings or any other Chrome:// built-in page, you see “Your browser is managed by your organization” message at the top of the page as shown in following screenshot:

Your_Browser_Is_Managed_By_Your_Organization_Google_Chrome.png

If you click on the message or link given in the message, Google Chrome starts loading following link in a new tab:

https://support.google.com/chromebook/?p=is_chrome_managed

The above mentioned link then redirects to following web page:

https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/1331549?p=is_chrome_managed

The web page mentions that your Chrome browser might be managed, or set up and maintained by a school, company, or other group. You start worrying because you are the only user using your computer and no other person is managing your computer. You think that your computer or browser is hacked.

You did everything including resetting browser to remove the message but nothing worked.

PROBLEM REASON:

First you should not worry about this message. It’s a new feature introduced in Google Chrome newer versions such as Chrome 73 and later versions.

Actually Google Chrome supports policies and you can change or restrict Chrome functionality using different policies. These policies can be applied using Registry Editor in Windows operating system as mentioned here. Sometimes an extension can also apply policies in your Chrome browser without your knowledge.

For Example: [Tip] How to Hide Bookmarks Bar on New Tab Page in Google Chrome

You can check which policies have been applied in Chrome by visiting about:policy or chrome://policy page.

This new feature in Chrome checks for existing policies and if it finds any policy applied in Chrome, it starts showing the “Managed by your organization” message in the More menu and Settings page.

So it’s not any bug or issue, it’s a feature by design.

PROBLEM SOLUTION 1:

If you want to disable or remove the “Managed by your organization” message in Google Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type managed in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Show managed UI for managed users
Enabled/disable showing enterprise users a ‘Managed by your organization’ message in the app menu and on some chrome:// pages. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS
#show-managed-ui

3. To disable/remove the “Managed by your organization” message in Chrome, select Disabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now try to open main menu or Settings page in Chrome and you’ll no longer see “Managed by your organization” message. It’ll disappear completely.

PS: If you want to enable the feature again in future, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.

PROBLEM SOLUTION 2:

There is another solution to remove this message from Chrome.

All policies applied in Google Chrome exist under following key in Registry Editor (regedit) in Windows operating system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

For example, following screenshot shows 2 policies applied in Google Chrome via above mentioned registry key:

Disable_Chrome_Cleanup_Registry_Editor.png

You can delete the Chrome key and all policies will be removed from Chrome and it’ll stop displaying “Managed by your organization” message to you.

NOTE 1: If you are using Linux operating system, all policies applied in Chrome can be found under following folder:

/etc/opt/chrome/policies

Delete the above mentioned folder to get rid of the “Managed by your organization” message in Chrome.

NOTE 2: If you are using Mac, you can remove Chrome policies using following steps:

First Go to the Finder and then go to /Library/Managed Preferences/[user]/

  • com.google.Chrome.plist
  • complete.plist

Remove these files and done. Thanks to our reader “Arif Janjua” for sharing it.

PROBLEM SOLUTION 3:

According to our readers “Βασίλης Χριστινάκης” and “Chuck”, Avast! antivirus web shield was causing this issue.

Βασίλης Χριστινάκης said:

In my case i found that AVAST web shield is the reason. If you close Chrome and disable the web shield then the message is gone. Of course i re-enabled it but at least i know its a safe now. So check your antivirus and web shield.

Chuck said:

For me this turned out to be something that Avast was doing with their webshield. It added a policy to Chrome called quicallowed. You can find out what is causing it by going to chrome://policy.

PROBLEM SOLUTION 4:

According to our reader “Toolworker”, this problem can also be caused by LastPass.

This problem can be caused by the LastPass password manager being installed, or updating itself. It can be removed temporarily by running regedit and deleting the keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

However, it will come back when LastPass updates again. The update places a LastPass shortcut on the desktop (at least on mine), so I know to look for Managed by Your Organization and delete the keys again.

LastPass tech support explains:

LastPass extension uses a Chrome api that is only ever supposed to be used when Chrome is being managed by an organization. Unfortunately there is no way to stop that registry key from being inserted.

  1. Arif, that worked – it removed the offending intruder from the ‘list’. Did it remove its seeds elsewhere – or is it still lurking? Grateful: the option to remove it was greyed out before.

  2. (April 2020) It seems that the option to remove the “Managed by …” text is now removed from the chrome://flags/ menu.

Deleting the whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome in regedit does the trick, but the “Managed by …” text will appear again after Chrome gets updated. Luckily for a mainstream Chrome version user that doesn’t happen too often.

    Thanks!

  4. Dear Comrades/Arid,

I tried the same for firefox by editing the file org.mozilla.firefox.plist and also complete.plist, no use, its still the same any help would be appreciated.

For my browser, they have disabled Offer to Save logins, i edited those files to make the boolean true, but no use.

I also moved them to a different location, still the organizatinal policies remained.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards

  5. Hi all,

both methods don’t work. My laptop is a stand alone, activated with digital license (private).
First method: “Show managed UI for managed users” doesn’t show up in chrome://flags.
Second method: no register strings besides default/no value
Still “managed by your organization” message is shown when clicking on the three dots.
When I go to chrome://policy, I have for chrome policies only quicAllowed with false and for Adblock plus, there is no policy active.
Google chrome version 81.x. April 18th.

  6. I agree with Koen.

Your methods for Windows 10 to remove managed by organization in Chrome are not working. I tried three solutions. I did with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome but it came up empty, not like “ChromeCleanupEnabled” and “ChromeCleanupReportingEnabled”. NOTHING.

  7. in my case i found that AVAST web shield is the reason. If you close Chrome and disable the web shield then the message is gone. Of course i renabled it but at least i know its a safe now.

So check your antivirus and web shield.

  8. In case you can’t login to sync your extensions, bookmarks, the “SyncDisabled” in regedit search and play with values. To allow sign in to the account there is SignInAllowed (or something like that) in the same folder.

  9. You don’t have to do any of that in the registry if you don’t want.

For me this turned out to be something that Avast was doing with their webshield. It added a policy to Chrome called quicallowed. You can find out what is causing it by going to chrome://policy.

  10. (If your computer is Mac)

The easiest and most effective way to deal with the problem right at the root cause of it is to go to “Profiles” under “System Preferences”. You will find a malicious profile (could be more than one) there, remove them and you will see that the problem has been solved.

It also solves the problem where by your default search engine was changed without your consent.

  11. Wow for me it was the Avast shield, can’t believe it! I reset to default chrome and it didn’t work. then i disabled Avast all shields and it immediately disappeared upon restarting chrome!

    Thanks for sharing!

  12. I download a software which was free
next day I have games purchased in my amazon account and other paid with paypal
google showed Managed by your Organization policies were changed by a program
my fault was to turn off the securities in pc

I dont even know how they accessed my amazon account or paypal if I have 2 steps verification
I also think they accessed my email.

  13. I don’t know why but it shows this, “njfhcannmndiogmgpckkgpgfpehimeif” thats the only policy I have installed. I don’t know if its bad but its just that, nothing is blocked and I had re installed chrome just today after remembering about it. Does anyone know what “njfhcannmndiogmgpckkgpgfpehimeif” is? Nothing worked, I delete everything In my policy folder, it still shows, This scares be please help.

  14. Alexander,
Most Antivirus software and security utilities use policies to observe critical parts of their software to prevent it from being infected by the very viruses that they protect you from (a bit like the health service and the COVID-19 virus. Policies are like PPE).
The string of characters you describe is very much like those of a malware infection and I suggest you obtain an offline anti-malware scanner to help with removal. If you google the string of characters, you will find details of the infection and how to remove it. BUT, please search on a different computer or your smartphone as the malware may have evolved (been made more difficult to remove) and may try to block search results that reveal its presence.

  15. How to get rid of the quicallowed policy?
I donot have Avast, and yet this policy appears.

  16. This is the only thing that helped me remove an adware that was administering my account and changing the default search engine to Yahoo, instead of Google. TYSM

  17. The last two times Lastpass updated (as indicated by leaving a shortcut on my Desktop), it did not cause the “browser managed by your organization” problem to be reinstalled. Perhaps Lastpass has fixed this aggravation.

  18. This has been a pain for I don’t know how long and it creeped me out by thinking I had a hacker. As mentioned in previous articles it’s harmless but it causes me to feel insecure. I recommended that they get rid of this name because it is not something that all people are going to understand and I’ve passed a couple of hours, well more, trying to get to the bottom of it, so now that I’m educated enough I still don’t want to see that. You’re help was immensely useful and well written in laymen terms. Bravo to you!!

  19. Solution in Linux:
    rm /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/*
    Restart google Chrome.

    Detail:
In my case I found a file /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed/00_gssapi.json which describes 2 policies added by Fedora. These policies were also presented in Policies menu from Chrome.
After removing this file, the message does not appear any more.

  20. When I went to chrome://flags, “Show Managed UI for managed users” is not there. When I went into the registry editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome, the only thing listed is the Default. Can you please help me? 😊

  21. Tried all the tricks, it still shows managed by. But at least i don’t have the annoying random links anymore. This also shows Chrome has a major issue. Not sure why they removed it from the flags. Even a clean install didn’t fix it, that’s kind of weird!!! did 2 uninstall, one keeping data, second remove all data

  22. Thanks to VG and “miguel on December 17, 2020”. The message was coming up in Chrome, chromium & Brave Browser on Fedora 33. I found the offending files miguel pointed out were put in place by the package ‘fedora-chromium-config’. Removing fedora-chromium-config fixed the issue for all three apps.

  23. If you are a Mac user, and you see seeing message as “Managed by organization”, then you follow the below steps:

To quickly reset chrome policies in Mac, follow these steps:

Open a new Terminal window. To do this, go to Finder > Go > Utilities > Terminal

Enter the below commands to remove “Managed by your organization” from Chrome policies one-by-one and press enter, after each one:

defaults write com.google.Chrome HomepageIsNewTabPage -bool false
defaults write com.google.Chrome NewTabPageLocation -string “google.com”
defaults write com.google.Chrome HomepageLocation -string “google.com”
    defaults delete com.google.Chrome DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL
    defaults delete com.google.Chrome DefaultSearchProviderNewTabURL
    defaults delete com.google.Chrome DefaultSearchProviderName
    defaults delete com.google.Chrome ExtensionInstallSources

All the Chrome’s policies are listed within chrome://policy/, type or paste this URL to your address bar. And click on “Reload Policies”.

  24. I’m crying for help because that one night I wanted to play game, and then I accidentally closed chrome, I reopened chrome and saw The Search Engine suddenly changed from Google to Bing and I was terrified, I was silently crying because I didn’t download anything that Night, Most of the downloads are Homeworks. Today I just found out it said Managed by your Organization policies and NONE of the youtube videos helped. I’m crying and always having goosebumps. I tried do the Regedit method, Worked and reverted back to Managed by your Organization policies. I tried resetting chrome, NOT WORK. I deleted extension, NOT WORK. This is making me having nervous. Somebody please help 😭😭😭😭
