Disable URL Collection and Permission Suggestions in Chrome

If you are using Google Chrome 120 or later version, you can disable “URL-based permission suggestions service” which collects the URLs of pages you visit and sends the collected data to Google to make searches and browsing better. This new change to permission suggestions service is a part of URL-keyed anonymized data collection feature which was already present in previous versions of Chrome.

Chrome web browser uses Permission Suggestions Service to provide Safe browsing feature to users. In older versions of Chrome, if safe browsing protection was enabled in the web browser, Chrome didn’t collect or send the typed URL to Google servers for permission suggestion service. But starting from Chrome 120, improvements or changes have been made to this functionality in the web browser.

Now Chrome adds a URL based signal to Permission Suggestions Service which contains URL of the web page the user visits. At the moment, Google is testing this new feature and only 1% of Chrome users should have received the feature.

Privacy concerned users might not like this change and might want to prevent or restrict Chrome from collecting and sending the URL data to servers.

Google team has provided a policy to enable or disable URL-keyed anonymized data collection feature as well as URL-based permission suggestions service in Chrome.

If you want to enable the new feature to test it or if you want to turn off the feature to improve privacy in Chrome web browser, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Press WIN+R key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

STEP 2: Now go to any of following keys:

If you want to enable or disable the URL-based permission suggestions service for all Windows users:

STEP 4: Again under Google key, create a new key and set its name to Chrome

So the final key path will be one of following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome

STEP 5: Now select Chrome key and in right-side pane, right-click and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” option. Set the new DWORD name as UrlKeyedAnonymizedDataCollectionEnabled

To disable and remove the URL-based permission suggestions service, leave the new DWORD value to 0
