Here is What Kind of Diagnostic Data is Collected by Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge web browser collects some essential and required browsing and usage data and reports it to Microsoft servers. Following are a few examples of the diagnostic data collected by Microsoft Edge:

  • Usage and crash-related data
  • Websites URLs visited in the browser to improve built-in services like search
  • Identifiers and usage diagnostics of built-in components that can modify or provide content, such as extensions or add-ons

Please note that the extra usage data such as websites URLs, etc is only collected when the “optional diagnostic data” option is enabled in the web browser. The options to control telemetry and collection of diagnostic data can be found on Microsoft Edge Settings -> Privacy, search, and services page.

Microsoft Edge has been designed to collect 2 types of diagnostic data:

  • Required diagnostic data
  • Optional diagnostic data

Required diagnostic data collection is enabled by default in Microsoft Edge and can’t be turned off by the user.

Optional diagnostic data is disabled by default and can be turned on/off by the user.

Completely Block or Disable All Kind of Diagnostic Data Collection in Microsoft Edge

Although Microsoft Edge doesn’t allow users to disable the required diagnostic data collection but there is a registry policy which can be implemented to completely disable the data collection in the web browser as well as control it.

By using this policy, we can prevent or restrict Microsoft Edge from collecting and sending any kind of diagnostic data to Microsoft.

PS: There should be no issue in keeping the required diagnostic data collection enabled in the web browser as it helps Microsoft in making the browser better and secure. If you are still worried about the privacy and want to permanently turn off full diagnostic data collection in your web browser, following steps will help you:

STEP 1: Press “WIN+R” key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

STEP 2: Now go to any of following keys:

If you want to disable or control diagnostic data collection feature for all Windows users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

If you want to disable or control diagnostic data collection feature for current user only:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

STEP 3: Under Microsoft key, create a new key and set its name to Edge

STEP 4: Now select Edge key and in right-side pane, right-click and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” option. Set the new DWORD name as DiagnosticData

Now you can set the value of the DWORD to any of the following according to your requirements:

  • To fully disable and turn off both required as well as optional diagnostic data collection in Edge, change the DWORD value to 0
  • To allow only required diagnostic data collection in Edge, change the DWORD value to 1
  • To allow both required as well as optional diagnostic data collection in Edge, change the DWORD value to 2

PS: Microsoft doesn’t recommend setting the value to 0 which completely blocks the required and optional diagnostic data collection in Edge.

STEP 5: Now restart Edge browser and the diagnostic data collection feature will be enabled or disabled in your device based on the policy value. To completely restart Edge, you can use edge://restart command in address bar.
