How to Enable or Disable Super Drag-n-Drop Mode in Microsoft Edge

Super drag-n-drop mode is a new feature available in Microsoft Edge 122 and later versions. This feature allows users to quickly open a link or search for selected text in a new tab using a simple drag-n-drop gesture. This article will help you in enabling or disabling the super drag drop feature in Microsoft Edge web browser.

What is Super Drag-n-Drop Mode in Microsoft Edge?

Starting from 122 version, Microsoft Edge web browser comes with a new feature called Super drag-n-drop mode. This feature helps users in opening any link or search page in new tab using a simple drag-n-drop function.

For example, you have opened a webpage in Microsoft Edge. Now you want to open a link present on the webpage or want to search for some text available on the webpage. You can simply drag-n-drop the link or selected text on the same webpage and Microsoft Edge will open the link or search page in a new tab immediately.

Currently the super drag-n-drop feature is a hidden secret feature and not enabled by default in Microsoft Edge 122 version. Microsoft will enable the feature to all users in future versions of the web browser.

Interested users can use the methods given below to manually activate and enable the super drag-n-drop feature right now in Microsoft Edge web browser.

Similarly, when the feature is rolled out to all users, you can disable or remove the super drag-n-drop feature using the methods given in this article.

Enable or Disable Super Drag-n-Drop Feature in Microsoft Edge Using Flags

There is a hidden secret preference/flag available to enable or disable the new super drag-n-drop feature in Microsoft Edge. You can modify this secret preference to manually turn on or off the super drag-n-drop mode in Edge using following steps:

STEP 1: Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

STEP 2: Now type super in the “Search flags” box.

Look for following option on the page:

Enables the super drag and drop feature. Then turns on or off this setting in edge://settings/superDragDrop. – Windows

STEP 3: To enable super drag-n-drop feature in Edge, select Enabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

To disable super drag-n-drop feature in Edge, select Disabled from the drop-down box for the above mentioned option.

STEP 4: Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

After restarting Edge, the super drag-n-drop feature will be enabled or disabled in your web browser based on the preference value.

Customize Super Drag-n-Drop Mode Using Microsoft Edge Settings Page

Once you enable super drag-n-drop feature in Microsoft Edge, it’ll add a dedicated section to turn on/off and customize the feature on Microsoft Edge Settings page.

You can follow the below steps to customize the super drag-n-drop feature in your web browser:

STEP 1: Click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

STEP 2: Now go to Appearance tab and in right-side pane, scroll down and you’ll see a new section labelled as “Super Drag and Drop“. It contains following 2 options:

  • Enable Super Drag and Drop
  • Configure Super Drag and Drop

You can quickly enable or disable the super drag-n-drop feature in Edge using the “Enable Super Drag and Drop” toggle option.

The second option “Configure Super Drag and Drop” allows users to change whether the link or search page should open in a background tab or foreground tab. You can also add desired websites to exception list to not allow super drag-n-drop feature on those websites.

Enable or Disable Super Drag-n-Drop Mode in Microsoft Edge Using Registry Policy

Microsoft has also provided an official policy to enable or disable super drag-n-drop feature in Edge web browser. Users can apply this policy by modifying Windows Registry.

Following steps will help you in implementing the required policy in your device:

STEP 1: Press “WIN+R” key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type regedit and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

STEP 2: Now go to any of following keys:

If you want to add or remove the feature for all Windows users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

If you want to add or remove the feature for current user only:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

STEP 3: Under Microsoft key, create a new key and set its name to Edge

STEP 4: Now select Edge key and in right-side pane, right-click and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” option. Set the new DWORD name as SuperDragDropEnabled

To enable super drag-n-drop feature in your device, change the DWORD value to 1

To disable super drag-n-drop feature in your device, leave the DWORD value to 0

Now restart Edge browser and the new super drag-n-drop feature will be enabled or disabled in your device based on the policy value.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings in Edge, delete the above mentioned DWORD from Registry.

NOTE: Your Browser is Managed by Your Organization Message in Edge

After applying the above mentioned policy or registry tweak, you may notice “Your browser is managed by your organization” message showing on Edge Settings page and main 3-dots Menu in your Edge browser. Don’t worry! It happens when you implement a policy in the web browser. You can safely ignore the message.
