[Fix] New Remote Not Working with Tata Play HD+ (Transfer or PVR) Set Top Box

If you purchased a new remote for your old Tata Play (formerly known as Tata Sky) HD+ PVR or Transfer set top box from official Tata Sky customer care or from an online shopping website or from any offline retail shop and the new remote is not working on the STB, this article will help you in fixing the issue and making the new remote working on the set top box.

In India, there are very few selected DTH (Direct To Home) service providers: Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H and Sun Direct. There was one more DTH company available from Reliance named Big TV which was later rebranded as Independent TV. Unfortunately their DTH service was shut down recently. There is one more DTH service available from government named DD Free Dish (previously known as DD Direct+) which is absolutely free and provides many Free To Air (FTA) channels to watch.

If you are using Tata Sky DTH service since a few years, there are chances that you might be using their good ol’ HD PVR Set Top Box which allows users to record 3 TV channels simultaneously. Tata Sky HD PVR box is known by various other names such as HD+, PVR, Transfer, etc. This Set Top Box comes with a built-in 500 GB Hard Disk (HDD) and 3 built-in tuners, that’s why users are able to record 3 TV channels at the same time. No other Set Top Box from any DTH services in India provide such kind of Set Top Box. Almost all DTH companies provide normal HD box with USB port and users can attach a USB drive (pen drive) to record a single TV channel at a time.

Recently an AskVG reader contacted me and asked following question:

Hi. I’m using TS HD+ Transfer box since many years. Recently its remote started giving problems and stopped working. I replaced batteries but to no avail. Then I ordered a new remote for it. I got the new remote but it’s not working with the Set Top Box. The remote is fine as I can operate TV with it but it can’t operate STB. Can you help me please?

Yes. I’ll help. Actually Tata Sky is providing a new model of remote for all Set Top Boxes including the old HD+ Transfer or PVR box.

Following image shows the new and old remote models of Tata Sky normal and HD+ box:

The new remote (2nd remote in the image) comes with a new feature or limitation. We have to pair the new remote with our STB manually. The new remote will not work until we pair or connect it with the STB.

That’s why the reader’s new remote is not working with the STB as he didn’t pair the remote with STB.

The procedure to pair the new remote with HD+ Transfer box is very simple.

If you also purchased a new remote for your Tata Sky HD+ PVR or Transfer box and it’s not working with the STB, you can pair it with STB manually using following steps:

Press and hold BACK and 0 buttons on the new remote for a few seconds and the LED light will blink.

That’s it. You have successfully paired new remote and now the remote will start working on your HD+ STB without any issues.

PS: This procedure will only work on HD+ PVR or Transfer box remote which comes with Record, Play/Pause, etc buttons.

BONUS TIP:

You can also unpair the new remote anytime by pressing and holding BACK and 0 buttons again on the remote. This trick might come useful if you are going somewhere and you want to lock the remote so that your kids don’t watch TV. Once you unpair the remote, no one will be able to switch on STB using the remote and no one will be able to change channels. To pair the remote again, press and hold BACK and 0 buttons on the remote. So the procedure to pair or unpair the new remote is same.
