[Tip] Set Your Tata Play Remote to Always Control TV Volume

Tata Sky is a popular DTH (Direct-To-Home) service provider company in India. It provides different types of Set Top Boxes (STB) to customers such as SD, HD and HD+ PVR (with recording) box.

Different STB of Tata Sky come with different remotes and most of the STB come with universal remotes which allow users to control their TV sets using Tata Sky remote. You can power on/off TV, change source of TV and adjust TV volume using Tata Sky universal remote. So you don’t need to use 2 remotes. You can control both Set Top Box and TV using a single universal remote.

Following are images of a few Tata Sky remotes which come with different Set Top Boxes:

Older Tata Sky remotes used to come with an extra “UNIV” button which was used to control TV set. So whenever you need to power on/off TV or change TV volume, you needed to first press UNIV button on Tata Sky remote. After that the Power and volume buttons on Tata Sky remote can be used to control TV set.

In newer Tata Sky universal remotes, UNIV button has been removed completely. Now users don’t need to press UNIV button before controlling their TV sets. A dedicated Power on/off button has been given in Tata Sky remote to control TV power function. Similarly a dedicated AV button has been given on Tata Sky remote to change TV source such as AV, HDMI, etc.

Now there are 2 problems or situations which you can face while using Tata Sky remotes:

PROBLEM 1:

Newer Tata Sky remotes don’t allow users to control TV volume as there is no UNIV button present on remote to control TV functions. If users press volume buttons on Tata Sky remote, it always adjusts Set Top Box volume by default. So Tata Sky users who received new universal remote, are unable to control TV volume using their STB remote.

PROBLEM 2:

In older Tata Sky universal remotes, users need to press an extra UNIV button whenever they want to control TV set volume using volume buttons. There might be situations when they want to directly control TV volume using STB remote buttons without pressing any extra button first but they can’t.

SOLUTION:

There is a single solution for both problems. Actually Tata Sky allows customers to set their STB remote to always control volume of their TV sets by default. So all Tata Sky customers can program their Tata Sky Set Top Box remote to always adjust their TV set volume whenever they press volume buttons on it. They don’t need to press UNIV button on older remote to control TV volume.

Same thing applies to newer Tata Sky remotes. You can program new universal remote to always control TV set volume so that you can use Tata Sky remove volume buttons to adjust TV volume rather than STB volume.

Setting Tata Sky remote to always control TV volume is a very easy and quick task and it’s also reversible which means if you have set the Tata Sky remote to always control TV volume, you can revert it back to control STB volume anytime whenever you want.

Following are the easy instructions to set Tata Sky universal remote to always control TV volume or Set Top Box volume as per your requirements:

If you have old Tata Sky remote which contains UNIV button:

Press and hold UNIV and SELECT buttons together for few seconds, the LED on remote will blink few times. It’ll program Tata Sky remote to always control TV volume. No need to press UNIV button.

If you want to program Tata Sky remote to always control Set Top Box volume, press and hold HOME and SELECT buttons together for few seconds, the LED on remote will blink few times. Now volume buttons on Tata Sky remote will always control Set Top Box volume.

NOTE: In HD+ PVR box or new STB, you may need to press BACK button instead of SELECT button on remote during following above mentioned instructions.

If you have new Tata Sky remote which does NOT contain UNIV button:

Press and hold HOME and BACK buttons together for few seconds, the LED on remote will blink 2 times. It’ll program Tata Sky remote to always control TV volume.

If you want to program Tata Sky remote to always control Set Top Box volume, press and hold HOME and BACK buttons together for few seconds again, the LED on remote will blink 4 times. Now you can again use Tata Sky remote’s volume buttons to control STB volume.

BONUS TIP:

It’s always a wise idea to set Tata Sky universal remote to always control TV volume and set Tata Sky Set Top Box volume to full or maximum. In this way, Tata Sky STB will always have maximum volume and you can adjust your TV volume directly using Tata Sky remote’s volume buttons.

To set Tata Sky Set Top Box volume to full or maximum, do as following:

1. Press “Organiser” (or Settings button in new remotes) button on your Tata Sky remote.

2. Now go to “User Settings -> Sound Settings” option.

3. Use the right key/button on your Tata Sky remote to set Set Top Box volume level to full.

4. Press Blue button on Tata Sky remote to save changes.

That’s it. Now whenever you switch on Tata Sky Set Top Box, it’ll always start with full volume and you can use Tata Sky remote’s volume buttons to adjust your TV volume without worries.
