PROBLEM: 0x80070643 ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE Windows Recovery Environment Servicing Failed

Many Windows 10/11 users are facing this issue. They are getting following error codes while trying to install the updates in their device or trying to sign into their user accounts:

0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE

Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed. (CBS_E_INSUFFICIENT_DISK_SPACE)

There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643).

PROBLEM REASON: KB5034440/41 Windows Recovery Environment Update for Windows 10/11

This problem is occurring due to new updates KB5034440/KB5034441 which were released for Windows 10/11 operating system yesterday as a part of Patch Tuesday program. Microsoft released a new security update KB5034441 for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2 and KB5034440 for Windows 11, version 21H2 on January 09, 2024. These are updates for Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) which address a security vulnerability that could allow attackers to bypass BitLocker encryption by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

But these updates are causing above mentioned 0x80070643 error code issue to many Windows 10/11 users. Microsoft knows the issue and it’s mentioned on official update information page:

Some computers might not have a recovery partition that is large enough to complete this update. Because of this, the update for WinRE might fail. In this case, you will receive the following error message:

Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed.

(CBS_E_INSUFFICIENT_DISK_SPACE)

To help you recover from this failure, please follow Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.

Because of an issue in the error code handling routine, you might receive the following error message instead of the expected error message when there is insufficient disk space:

0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE

SOLUTION 1: Use Windows Update Reset Script to Remove the Update from Windows Updates Page

You can use our exclusive Windows Reset script which will remove the culprit update from Windows Updates page and you can start checking for new updates again.

You can read more information about the script and download it from following article:

SOLUTION 2: Manually Resize Partition to Install WinRE Update KB5034440/41

Microsoft has also provided official instructions to fix the issue which are as following:

PS: This method should be followed by advanced users or experts only who have experience and knowledge of disk partitioning and Command Prompt tool. Incorrect commands can damage the hard disk and you might lose the data stored on the HDD.

  • Open Command Prompt window as Administrator using any method mentioned in this article.
  • Now run reagentc /info command to check WinRE status. If WinRE is installed, there should be a “Windows RE location” with a path to the WinRE directory.
  • To disable WinRE, run reagentc /disable command.
  • Shrink the OS partition and prepare the disk for a new recovery partition.
    • To shrink the OS, run diskpart
    • Run list disk
    • To select the OS disk, run sel disk<OS disk index>  This should be the same disk index as WinRE.
    • To check the partition under the OS disk and find the OS partition, run list part
    • To select the OS partition, run sel part<OS partition index>
    • Run shrink desired=250 minimum=250
    • To select the WinRE partition, run sel part<WinRE partition index>
    • To delete the WinRE partition, run delete partition override
  • Create a new recovery partition.
  • First, check if the disk partition style is a GUID Partition Table (GPT) or a Master Boot Record (MBR).  To do that, run list disk. Check if there is an asterisk character (*) in the “Gpt” column.  If there is an asterisk character (*), then the drive is GPT. Otherwise, the drive is MBR.
    • If your disk is GPT, run create partition primary id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac followed by the command gpt attributes =0x8000000000000001
    • If your disk is MBR, run create partition primary id=27
  • To format the partition, run format quick fs=ntfs label=”Windows RE tools”
  • To confirm that the WinRE partition is created, run list vol
  • To exit from diskpart, run exit
  • To re-enable WinRE, run reagentc /enable
  • To confirm where WinRE is installed, run reagentc /info

NOTE: If creation failed or you did not want to extend the WinRE partition, run reagentc /enable to re-enable WinRE.

After following above mentioned steps, the problem should be solved.

  1. I have a similar trouble with KB 5034441, mine will not install due to Bit locker encryption is not in the Windows 10 Home package. Microsoft UK will not answer the phone at the moment either.

I do not understand the technical jargon to update the disk partition either.

How do I work around this issue, I will download the hide tool though.
