Error Message on Windows 10 Desktop After Uninstalling Windows 11 PC Health Check App

Are you also getting following error message in Windows 10 computer while refreshing the Desktop or opening This PC (File Explorer) window?

Location is not available

C:\Users\Your_User_Name\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you’re connected to the network or Internet, and then try again. If the location still can’t be found, it might have been moved or deleted.

Recently I installed official “Windows 11 PC Health Check App” released by Microsoft in one of my Windows 10 devices to check whether the device will be compatible with the upcoming Windows 11 operating system. As we know Microsoft will allow eligible Windows 10 computers to upgrade to Windows 11 for free if they meet minimum system requirements for Windows 11 and to check whether a Windows 10 device will support Windows 11 upgrade, Microsoft has released an official PC Health Check app for Windows 10 users.

We can install the app in a Windows 10 system and it’ll scan and check the hardware such as processor, RAM, free HDD space, graphics card, etc. Once the checking is completed, the app displays message whether the device supports Windows 11 or not.

The app was working fine but today when I tried to launch the app, it first displayed “Preparing to install an update” message in a small window with a progress bar as shown in following screenshot:

And then it opened a Windows Installer (MSI) window showing “Preparing to install” and then “Please wait while Windows configures Windows PC Health Check” messages as shown in following screenshot:

And then nothing happened, the window closed. I tried to launch PC Health Check app several times and every time, I received above mentioned message windows.

Then I decided to uninstall the app using Control Panel -> Programs and Features page. The app was removed successfully.

But when I closed Control Panel window and refreshed the Desktop, I got above mentioned error message “Location is not available“. Whenever I try to refresh the Desktop, Windows 10 shows this annoying error message.

Following animated GIF image shows the problem live in action:

The same thing is happening if I try to open a Windows Explorer window. If I open This PC by clicking on its icon on Desktop or by pressing WIN+E hotkeys, File Explorer opens but Windows 10 also displays same error message in a dialog box.

Following GIF image shows the error message occurring in File Explorer window:

The error message disappears upon clicking on OK button but if I refresh or open the window again, the error message appears again.

Is anyone else also facing similar issue in Windows 10 after uninstalling PC Health Check app?

  1. I was able to uninstall the app on Windows10 21H1 here and had no issue with an error message showing up upon refreshing the desktop. MS has pulled the app due to the useless information that it provided the end user. A third party util from GitHub at least provides more detailed explanation of where your computer fails.

  2. Not sure if this is connected but today I restarted my pc the first time since installing the health check. When booted up to my login screen and clicking the sign in, the process starts and then returns to my sign in screen. I have 2 other users and they work normally. All users have admin rights. I downloaded the health check when logged on as myself. Tried to do a system restore to prior to the health check installation but it failed. Won’t go past my sign in screen
