List of Deprecated and Removed Features in Windows 11

Today Microsoft announced about Windows 11, the next Windows version which is going to release later this year.

Windows 11 will come with many new features and major UI changes. But there are a few features which are present in Windows 10 but have been deprecated or removed from Windows 11 operating system.

In this article, we are going to share a complete list (officially shared by Microsoft) of all such features which will not be present or supported in Windows 11 operating system:

1. Cortana will not included on OOBE (first boot experience) setup screen. Also it’ll not be pinned to the Taskbar.

2. Desktop wallpaper cannot be roamed to or from device when signed in with a Microsoft account.

3. Internet Explorer will be disabled. Microsoft Edge will replace IE as mentioned here.

4. Math Input Panel is removed. Math Recognizer will install on demand and includes the math input control and recognizer. Math inking in apps like OneNote are not impacted by this change.

5. News and Interests feature removed from Taskbar notification area. It has been improved with new functionality which can be found by clicking the Widgets icon on the Taskbar.

6. Quick Status from the Lock Screen and associated settings are removed.

7. S Mode is only available now for Windows 11 Home edition.

8. Snipping Tool continues to be available but the old design and functionality in the Windows 10 version has been replaced with those of the app previously known as Snip & Sketch.

9. Start Menu is significantly changed in Windows 11 including the following key deprecations and removals:

  • Named groups and folders of apps are no longer supported and the layout is not currently resizable.
  • Pinned apps and sites will not migrate when upgrading from Windows 10.
  • Live Tiles are no longer available. For glanceable, dynamic content, see the new Widgets feature.

10. Taskbar functionality is changed including:

  • People is no longer present on the Taskbar.
  • Some icons may no longer appear in the System Tray (systray) for upgraded devices including previous customizations.
  • Alignment to the bottom of the screen is the only location allowed. Users can’t move Taskbar to other areas of screen such as top, left or right. It’s locked at bottom.
  • Apps can no longer customize areas of the Taskbar.

11. Tablet Mode is removed and new functionality and capability is included for keyboard attach and detach postures.

12. Timeline is removed. Some similar functionality is available in Microsoft Edge.

13. Touch Keyboard will no longer dock and undock keyboard layouts on screen sizes 18 inches and larger.

14. Wallet is removed.

15. Clean install of Windows 11 will not come with following apps. These apps will be available for download from the Store:

  • 3D Viewer
  • OneNote for Windows 10
  • Paint 3D
  • Skype

In my opinion, restrictions to keep the Taskbar on bottom only might be problematic for many people. I hope Microsoft will add options to move the Taskbar to other areas of screen as well.

  1. What does it mean that: “Apps can no longer customize areas of the Taskbar.”

Does it mean that start menu replacements such as Classic Start Menu or Start 10 will work no more? That’d be real shame!

  2. Will the new version of Windows completely remove IE and all of it’s functions? I mean, I still use programs that are dependent on ieframe.dll to display content.

  3. Windows 11….when downloaded can I make a standalone copy for later installation?

  4. ^^ Once released, there will be official ISO file available for download to use later.

    @Anthony
No. IE will not be removed completely as it’s required for IE mode in Edge.

  5. Hi VG, i gave try to Win 11, and i cant add wireless display feature. I try and always failed, can you help me to solve this problem? i use win 11 dev. Thanks.

  6. Will there be toolbar support in Windows 11 ? because i tried Windows 11 dev version but they removed toolbar options in taskbar right click menu

  7. One more thing I saw removed is the ability “Never combine taskbar buttons”, which to be honest is a shame – it’s really useful while working with multiple windows from one app. Hope MS will bring this back.
