Disable Start Page (Speed Dial) Opening Animation in Opera Web Browser

UPDATE: The new opening animation effect has been enabled for all users in the latest Opera 107.0.5045.21 stable and later versions. If you want to disable the new animation effect in Opera browser which can slow down the Start Page and speed dial shortcuts, this article will assist you.

A few Opera users have reported annoying animation effect which appears while opening Start Page or Speed Dial page in the web browser. If you are looking for a way to get rid of the new animation feature, this article will help you.

The Start Page is also known as various other names such as Homepage, New Tab Page (NTP) and Speed Dial page. The Start Page is displayed when you launch Opera web browser or open a new tab.

We have received reports from few readers who were using Opera web browser and facing a weird animation issue. Whenever they open Opera browser or click on new tab button, the Start Page is shown using a slow animation effect as shown in following animated image:

The new animation effect causes extra delay in accessing the start page and also slows down the web browser. Many Opera users are looking for ways to disable or remove this new opening animation effect on Start page.

Fortunately, Opera team has provided a hidden secret preference/flag which can be used to enable or disable the new Start Page opening animation feature in Opera browser.

If you also want to disable the new animation effect on Start Page or want to forcefully enable the animation effect to test it, following steps will help you:

1. Launch Opera web browser and type opera://flags in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the hidden secret advanced configuration page called “Experiments“.

2. Now click inside “Search flags” text box and type animation. It’ll show following option in the result:

3. To disable Start Page opening animation effect, select “Disabled” from the drop-down box.

If you want to enable the animation effect on Start Page, select “Enabled” from the drop-down box.

4. Opera will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Opera.

That’s it. The animation effect will be enabled/disabled in your Opera web browser based on the selected preference value.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings, set the above mentioned flag value to Default again.

  1. Thanks for this option. Should be in Standard settings as it is annoying if sound is on. Always scares me when opening browser. The Logo is not the problem its the sound.
