Windows 10 will Get Only One Feature Update Per Year

If you regularly install feature updates in your Windows 10 operating system, this is an important news for you. Microsoft has announced that the company will release only one feature update for Windows 10 every year. In other words, Microsoft has switched to one feature update once a year plan for Windows 10.

In past, Windows 10 was receiving 2 feature updates every year: one feature update was a major update introducing new features and changes and the other was a small minor update including general fixes and enhancements.

But since last year, Microsoft started releasing only minor feature updates for Windows 10 which didn’t add any special or extra features to Windows 10. The feature updates only contained small fixes and changes such as 20H2, 21H1 and recently released 21H2.

People were already having strong feeling that Microsoft may change the release schedule of Windows 10 feature updates and finally Microsoft made an official announcement proving those guesses true.

What are Windows 10 Feature Updates?

Feature updates can be considered as Service Packs for Windows 10. Feature updates are actually new versions of Windows 10 which are released by Microsoft to add new features and fix known issues.

Since Microsoft stopped launching new versions of Windows operating system as a part of Windows as a service (WaaS) initiative, the company was releasing feature updates for Windows 10 regularly to add new functionality.

Everything Changed After Windows 11 Release

But with the release of new Windows 11 operating system, everything changed. Now Microsoft will focus on Windows 11 which is the future of Windows OS and that’s why Windows 10 is getting only minor feature updates.

Windows 10 to Get One Feature Update Every Year

Since Microsoft was releasing small feature updates for Windows 10 which were not adding any extra interesting features, there was no benefit in releasing 2 small feature updates every year.

That’s why now Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will receive only a single feature update every year and don’t expect any major changes or features in those future updates.

Here is the official announcement from Microsoft:

We will transition to a new Windows 10 release cadence to align with the Windows 11 cadence, targeting annual feature update releases. We are now renaming the servicing option for releases to the General Availability Channel starting with the November 2021 Update (Note: this replaces the previous “Semi-Annual Channel” term for the servicing option). The next Windows 10 feature update is slated for the second half of 2022. We will continue to support at least one version of Windows 10 through Oct. 14, 2025. As a second half (H2) of the calendar year release, Home and Pro editions of the November 2021 Update will receive 18 months of servicing and support, and Enterprise and Education editions will receive 30 months of servicing and support beginning today.

  1. Dear VG
Microsoft will support Windows 10 till October 14, 2025,
    What me worry
By then windows 11 will be sort of ready

    Keep up the good work

  2. PS
Better one update a year then twice
They will have more time to check the quality.
    Everybody will be happy

  3. Actually I feel @AskVG,
Nothing new really is happening in feature updates since 1903. 1903 upto 21H1 is just minor changes.

I am still confused even after reading your Windows 11 review if I should be using it as my daily OS. I can understand the taskbar restrictions.
