Windows 10 version 21H1, The Next Feature Update to be a Minor Service Pack

Microsoft has announced the name of the next feature update for Windows 10 operating system. It’ll be called Windows 10 version 21H1 and will be a minor feature update similar to the last feature update (20H2).

Version 21H1 will be a small feature update which will be delivered via Windows Updates in form of a monthly cumulative update. It’ll be very small in size and will take less time in download and installation. It’ll be delivered using servicing technology of Windows Updates which is used by Microsoft to deliver monthly cumulative updates.

21H1 will be released and delivered in first half of 2021, most probably in April or May 2021.

You can consider 21H1 like a mini service pack for Windows 10 which will contain improvements and enhancements for performance, security and stability. Do not expect major changes or new features in this upcoming feature update.

Please note 21H1 will be delivered as a small update only for Windows 10 version 20H2 and version 2004 (May 2020 Update) users. If you are using an older version of Windows 10 i.e. older feature update, you’ll be unable to upgrade to 21H1 via Windows Update. You’ll need to perform a full installation of 21H1 by downloading and upgrading to 21H1 using official Microsoft tools or offline ISO files.

21H1 will come with new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge web browser build-in and the legacy UWP-based Microsoft Edge will be removed completely. Microsoft has decided to permanently replace Legacy version of Microsoft Edge with new Chromium version in Windows 10.

Other changes and improvements in 21H1 will be as following:

• Windows Hello multicamera support to set the default as the external camera when both external and internal Windows Hello cameras are present.
• Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements including optimizing document opening scenario times.
• Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.

So the next feature update i.e. Windows 10 version 21H1 will be a very small update which will bring improvements only.

Let me tell you the second feature update of this year i.e. version 21H2 will be a big and major feature update which will contain lots of new features and UI changes. 21H2 will be released in second half of 2021, most probably in October or November 2021.
