[Tip] How to Switch to a Local User Account in Windows 11

Recently we posted a detailed article about installing Windows 11 operating system using a local user account or offline account. Actually Windows 11 setup forces users to use an online Microsoft account to sign in and complete the setup but there are ways to bypass this restriction and create a local user account while installing Windows 11.

Now there are some people who already installed Windows 11 in their computer systems using their Microsoft Account but now they want to switch to a local user account after installation.

Recently I received following email from an AskVG reader:

Hi VG

I installed Windows 11 in my machine a few days back using my Outlook ID. Now I want to convert my user account into an offline account due to privacy concerns. Is it possible to switch to a local account without reinstalling Windows 11?

Yes. It’s possible. Microsoft allows users to switch to a local user account even after installing Windows 11. So if you don’t want to use your Microsoft Account to sign into Windows 11, you can create and use a local user account.

If you also want to switch to a local or offline account in Windows 11 after installation, following steps will help you:

1. First of all open Settings app from Start Menu. Alternatively, you can press WIN+I keys together to open Settings directly.

2. Now click on Accounts tab present in left-side pane.

3. In right-side pane, click on “Your info” option.

PS: There is another way to directly open Your account info page. When you open Settings app, click on your Microsoft Account user picture or avatar icon showing at the top-left corner. It’ll directly go to “Your Info” page.

4. Now you’ll see an option “Sign in with a local account instead” present under “Account settings” section.

Click on the option and Windows 11 will open setup wizard to create a local user account.

Windows will ask for your confirmation by showing “Are you sure you want to switch to a local account?” question, click on “Next” button.

Windows will ask to enter your account password for verification purposes, enter the password and click on “OK” button.

On next screen, enter desired user account name and set a password for the new account.

Also set a password hint which can be any text string.

Click on Next button and then click on “Sign out and Finish” button.

That’s it. It’ll log out and create your new local user account.

Now you can start using Windows 11 with a local user account.

In future, if you want to switch to an online account again, you can follow same steps to add your Microsoft Account.
