Linux Users Rejoice: Microsoft Edge Web Browser Now Available for Download

UPDATE: Microsoft Edge final Stable version is now available for Linux. Interested users can download the Stable build of Microsoft Edge for Linux from following official Microsoft Edge download page or retrieve the program using command-line from a Linux package manager.

Good news for Linux users! If you were waiting for the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge web browser to become available for Linux operating system, your wait is over now.

Microsoft has released Microsoft Edge web browser for Linux platform. Currently only preview builds (for testing purposes) are available for download for Linux distros.

Interested users can download Microsoft Edge Insider Preview builds for Dev channel and Beta channel for their Linux distro using the information given below.

Microsoft Edge is a new web browser released by Microsoft. It’s based on popular Chromium project’s Blink rendering engine which also powers Google Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi web browsers.

In past, Microsoft Edge was only available for Windows and Mac operating systems. Microsoft already announced in past that the browser will become available very soon for Linux users and now the day has come.

Linux users can download and install Microsoft Edge web browser in 2 ways:

1. Direct download and install .deb or .rpm packages from official Microsoft Edge website. For your convenience, we are providing the direct link to these packages download pages:

2. Alternatively, you can use your Linux distribution’s standard package management tools and install Microsoft Edge browser from Microsoft’s Linux Software Repository.

At the moment Microsoft Edge browser’s preview builds are available for download for following popular Linux distributions:

  • Ubuntu
  • Debian
  • Fedora
  • openSUSE

Currently the features set is limited for Linux users as this is a preview build. More features and functionality will be added in future preview builds.

Since the preview build is available for Dev and Beta channels, you’ll receive weekly updates if you install Microsoft Edge browser in your Linux distro.

PS: You’ll need 64-bit version of Linux distro to be able to download and install Microsoft browser. 32-bit packages are not available for download.
