[Tip] How to Stop People from Adding You to WhatsApp Groups Without Your Permission?

If you use WhatsApp in your mobile phone, you might have faced this problem many times. Group admins can add you to their WhatsApp groups without your permission. Actually anyone can add you to his/her WhatsApp group without even asking for your permission.

Many times our friends, relatives, colleagues and even unknown person create new groups on WhatsApp and they add us to their groups. They don’t need to ask us for our permission before adding us to their groups. WhatsApp allows its users to create groups and add other people without any permission.

Although we have an option to Exit from a WhatsApp group but the group admins can re-add us to their groups and it becomes very annoying. Many times we don’t want to join a WhatsApp group but group admins force us by adding us again and again. Since we don’t receive any permission or confirmation prompt, we can’t refuse the group requests.

We have received many queries in past from our readers regarding this WhatsApp problem. We receive questions such as is there any way to stop people from adding me to their WhatsApp group without my permission? How to block someone from adding me to WhatsApp group? How can I completely block/restrict all groups in WhatsApp so that no one can add me to groups? etc.

WhatsApp was also receiving these complaints since long time and users were requesting WhatsApp team to add a feature so that group admins need to ask users permissions before adding them to their groups.

Finally WhatsApp team has added this much awaited feature to newer versions of WhatsApp. WhatsApp 2.19.98 and later versions come with this new feature which allows you to control WhatsApp groups. If you want this feature, make sure you have upgraded to the latest version of WhatsApp.

Now you can select who can add you to groups in WhatsApp using following steps:

1. Open WhatsApp on your mobile phone, tap on 3 vertical dots menu present at the top-right corner and select Settings option.

2. Now tap on “Account -> Privacy” option.

3. Scroll down to bottom and you’ll see “Groups” option. This is the new option which allows users to decide who can add them to groups in WhatsApp.

To change the setting, tap on “Groups” option and it’ll open Groups settings in new page.

4. Now you’ll have following 3 options to select present under “Who can add me to groups” section:

  • Everyone
  • My contacts
  • Nobody

By default the option is set to Everyone which means everyone can add you to groups without your permission.

You can change the option to “My contacts” so that only people present in your contacts list can add you to their groups.

If you want to permanently and completely block all groups in WhatsApp so that no one can add you to any group in WhatsApp, set the option to Nobody. Now if a group admin tries to add you to a group in WhatsApp, he’ll receive “Couldn’t add” error message and no one will be able to add you to any WhatsApp group without your permission.

Now group admins will need to invite you to join their groups by inviting you privately.

  1. Hi VG,
The download link for the 64bit desktop App version also doesn’t have the control group access option!

  2. Have no idea what is, nor do I want to know, what a What’s App Group is; and certainly don’t want people adding my name to it!

  3. Yay! No more annoyances. Previously my relatives used to add me to their groups and I could not exit the group as it will make them angry and upset. Now I have set it to nobody and no more tension.

  4. Although I’ve upgraded to latest version of whatsapp but this ”group option” doesn’t shows up in whatsapp > settings > account > privacy ”no group option”

  5. The option is available for me. WhatsApp might be doing A/B testing and adding this new option for selected users.

I have 2 mobiles and the option is available in both mobiles.

  6. I have the same problem with Hawk and Wisdom.
I have WhatsApp 2.19.216, but this option don’t appear to me.
