[Tip] How to Save Your Contacts Status Images and Videos in WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a very popular social networking app among mobile phone users. Almost all smartphone users have this app installed in their mobile phones. In fact many people purchase only those smartphones which come with this app preinstalled. If the mobile phone doesn’t contain WhatsApp, the first thing which many people do, is installing WhatsApp immediately and then start using the mobile phone. WhatsApp keeps connected people by allowing them to share photos, videos, files, text messages, etc. It has become a part of life for many people.

Some time back, WhatsApp started a new “Status” feature which can be used to set any desired status in form of text, photos or videos. You can view your contacts status using “Status” tab in WhatsApp.

Many times you may like someone’s status image or video and want to save it on your mobile phone so that you can view the image or watch the video later but unfortunately WhatsApp doesn’t allow to save status images and videos.

If the status is an image, you can take help of phone’s built-in screenshot feature to take a screenshot of it. It can be used as a workaround.

But if the status is a video, you can’t save it using the screenshot feature.

There are many apps available to save and store WhatsApp status images and videos but today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to save your contacts status images and videos on your mobile phone without using any 3rd party app.

It’s very simple to save WhatsApp status images and videos. In fact when you view someone’s status, its automatically downloaded and stored on your mobile phone and then displayed in WhatsApp. So you can copy the status image or video and save it for future use.

If you also want to know how to save WhatsApp status images and videos on your mobile phone, following steps will help you:

1. The status files are already stored on your mobile phone but temporarily. So we need to copy the files to somewhere else to store them permanently.

To copy and save the status files, first open Files Manager in your mobile phone. It can be found in all apps list and can be present with any name such as “Files“, “My Files“, “File Manager“, etc.

2. After opening File Manager, we need to enable hidden files display feature. By default, File Manager doesn’t display hidden files and folders and WhatsApp status are stored in a hidden folder so we’ll need to enable hidden files/folders display.

Tap on 3-dots icon showing on the top-right corner of File Manager and select “Settings” option. In some mobile phones, you’ll find this option with a different name. Or in some mobile phones, you may directly get option to “Show hidden files” in 3-dots menu.

Once you open Settings page, you’ll get a toggle option to turn “Show hidden files” on/off. Tap and the option and set it to ON.

3. Now go back to File Manager main page and tap on “Internal Storage” section.

4. Now tap on “WhatsApp” folder.

5. Under WhatsApp folder, tap on “Media” folder. This folder contains all user files such as shared images, videos, audio clips, documents, profile photos, animated gifs, etc.

6. Now you’ll see the hidden “.Statuses” folder. Tap on it.

7. This folder contains all images and videos which are shown in “Status” tab of WhatsApp.

Now you can select desired image and video and copy/move the files to any other desired folder in your mobile phone.

That’s it. Using this method, you can save your contacts status images and videos permanently on your mobile phone.

If you delete or move an image/video file from “.Statuses” folder in File Manager, it’ll stop showing in WhatsApp Status page and you’ll get “Sorry, this media file doesn’t exist on your internal storage” error message.

So you can also free up space on your mobile phone by deleting unwanted status images and videos using File Manager.

PS: You can copy and save other things as well from “Media” folder such as your contacts profile photos, etc.

  2. ^^ I have many Android devices. The screenshots were taken using Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running on Android 7.0 Nougat.

  3. This can be done simply by using Status Downloader for Whatsapp android app. All these steps are not necessary.

  5. Hi, I have a samsung A70 phone nd I need your help in accessing the folder where whatsap(and other apps) is installed. I need help as I can not use Myfiles to do this…

  6. There is a way to safe a status video on iPhones:
    1. Check in your Control centre if you have enabled “Screen recoding”
    2. If so, when you watch a status video, and you want to safe it to your camera roll, swipe up control centre and tap on screen recording.
    3. You have a countdown of 3 SEC to tap on the left side of your screen to restart the video.
    4. You must stay on the status video, every notification, 90° turn of screen and so on will be on the recording.
    5. When the status video has finished tap on the red bar on Top of your screen and the recording will stop and a notification willl inform you when you can find the video on your camera roll.
    6.) To have the 100% joy in your friends status video, it’s paramount to crop your recorded video!
