If you also want to format your messages text in WhatsApp to impress your friends and relatives, following steps will help you:

There are 2 methods to format message text in WhatsApp:

  • Manual method
  • Automatic method

Let’s discuss about them one by one:

1. Manual Way to Format Messages Text in WhatsApp

Advanced users will love to use this method to format their messages text. Whenever you want to format a selected part or whole message in WhatsApp, do as following:

  • To make the text Bold, insert an asterisk (*) before and after the desired text. Example: *This text is bold*
  • To make the text Italic, insert an underscore (_) before and after the desired text. Example: _This text is italic_
  • To make the text Strikethrough, insert a tilde (~) before and after the desired text. Example: ~This text is strikethrough~
  • To make the text Monospace, insert 3 backticks (“`) before and after the desired text. Example: “`This text is monospace“`

As soon as you put the above mentioned characters on both sides of your message text, your message text will be formatted immediately.

PS: You can also combine the formatting options. For example, you can make your message text both Bold and Italic using both * and _ together before and after your message text. Example: *_This text is bold and italic_*

2. Automatic Way to Format Messages Text in WhatsApp

Very few WhatsApp users know about this method. WhatsApp also provides direct options to format messages text without using any special characters as mentioned above.

When you type your message, select whole or desired part of your message which you want to format by tap and hold on the text and WhatsApp will show a pop-up toolbar containing cut, copy, etc options. Click on 3-dots (More) icon present at the end of the toolbar and a context menu will appear on screen. You’ll find options to Bold, Italic, Strikethrough and Monospace the text directly in the menu.

  1. mine doesn’t have the automatic way. when I tap & hold the text there are only search icon, cut, copy and share. Any explanation?? I’m on version 2.19.53

  2. ^^ You are using the latest version. The options do appear on the same WhatsApp version in my mobile phone. You need to tap on 3 vertical dots icon present at the right-side of the toolbar to get those options.

  3. Nope, there are no 3 dots or MORE on the right side believe me… it is kinda strange. Perhaps I can give you screenshot on twitter?

  4. ^^ I checked your screenshot on Twitter. The toolbar in your screenshot looks different. Which mobile phone are you using?

  5. ^^ It seems Xiaomi is showing their own toolbar instead of default WhatsApp/Android toolbar. That’s why you are not getting the options.
