[Tip] Disable Recommended Features Suggestions in Mozilla Firefox

You might remember that last year we posted a tutorial about disabling recommended extensions suggestions in Mozilla Firefox web browser. You can learn more about it in following tutorial:

[Tip] Disable Recommended Extensions Suggestions in Mozilla Firefox

In above tutorial, we told you about a new feature in Firefox browser which automatically recommends and suggests extensions to users using Contextual Feature Recommender (CFR) which allows Mozilla to occasionally show personalized extensions recommendations to users based on their visited websites or ways they engage with the browser.

Many users found these extensions suggestions as promotions and advertisements, that’s why we shared a guide to turn off these unwanted extensions suggestions in Firefox.

Now another new version of Firefox has been released which comes with a similar feature called recommended features suggestions. This new feature highlights useful features (such as Pin Tabs, etc) when users are most likely to benefit from them.

Following screenshot shows this new recommended featured suggestions feature live in action in newer versions of Firefox browser:

You can see in above screenshot, Firefox is showing a suggestion to try Pin Tabs feature. Firefox shows a new “Recommendation” label with a light bulb icon in the address bar when users visit a website. When you click on the “Recommendation” label, a new pop-up is displayed in address bar which shows a feature suggestion. The pop-up includes a video or animation showing how-to use the suggested feature which can be paused by clicking on Pause button given at the bottom-right corner of the pop-up. Users can click on the first button given in the pop-up window to try or use the feature or click on “Not Now” button or “Don’t Show Me This Recommendation” option to dismiss the feature suggestion.

If these feature suggestions are shown frequently by Firefox, users may find them annoying. If you also find these recommendations/suggestions/tips irritating and want to disable them, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to turn off these features recommendations and suggestions and how to get rid of them permanently in Firefox web browser.

Fortunately Firefox provides an option to opt out of these features recommendations and suggestions. You can completely block this new feature using following methods:

METHOD 1: Using Firefox Options (About:Preferences) Page

1. Open Firefox and click on the Hamburger icon present at the right-side end of the toolbar to open the main menu. Now click on Options menu to open Firefox settings page.

Alternatively, you can direct option this page using about:preferences command in address bar.

2. Now under “General” tab, scroll down to bottom and go to “Browsing” section.

3. You’ll see “Recommend features as you browse” option.

It’s enabled by default i.e. features recommendations are shown.

Uncheck the option to disable features recommendations and suggestions.

Now you’ll no longer receive recommended features suggestions in Firefox.

PS: When a feature recommendation is shown in Firefox address bar, you can click on the down arrow given at the bottom-right corner of the pop-up and select “Manage Recommendation Settings” option. It’ll directly let you go to “Browsing” section in Firefox Options page.

METHOD 2: Using About:Config Page

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

2. Now type cfr in Search filter box and it’ll show following preference in the window:

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.asrouter.userprefs.cfr.features

3. The preference value is set to true, it means the features recommendations are enabled.

Double-click on browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.asrouter.userprefs.cfr.features preference and set its value to false. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.

That’s it. It’ll immediately turn off features recommendations in Firefox browser.
