[Tip] How to Enable Dark Mode in Chrome on Android Mobile Phones

SUMMARY: This tutorial will help you in activating and enabling secret Dark Mode in Chrome app in any Android mobile phone.

A few months back, we told you how to enable the new hidden secret Dark Mode (or Night Mode) in Google Chrome web browser in computers. Google Chrome 73 and later versions for PC come with a new dark theme mode which can convert Chrome UI to dark.

The trick mentioned in above tutorial was applicable only for Chrome on Windows 10 computers.

If you are using a Google Android smartphone and want to enjoy Dark Mode in Chrome app, this article will help you.

Google has released a new version of Chrome for Android mobile phones which comes with this new Dark Theme Mode. By default the Dark Mode is hidden and not accessible to users but we can activate and enable it using some flags or preferences.

Following image shows new Dark Mode working in Chrome app on Android mobile phone:

UPDATE: In newer versions of Chrome, the Dark Mode feature is enabled and available for all users. You can apply Dark Mode in Chrome app by opening Chrome Settings and then selecting Themes option. Now you can select Light or Dark theme according to your requirements.

If you are using an older version of Chrome and want to manually activate and enable Dark Mode in Chrome on Android mobile phones and tablets, following steps will help you:

STEP 1:

First of all make sure you are using latest version of Chrome app. You must be using Chrome 74 or later version to be able to enjoy this hidden secret trick.

STEP 2:

Open Chrome and type chrome://flags in address bar and tap on Go. It’ll open Chrome Experiments page where you can turn on/off several features.

Now type Dark in Search flags box and it’ll show following result:

If enabled, user can enable Android Chrome UI dark mode through settings. – Android
#enable-android-night-mode

Tap on the “Default” drop-down box and select “Enabled” option from the list.

Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch Now” button to relaunch Google Chrome.

STEP 3:

Now tap on 3-dots menu in Chrome and select Settings option. It’ll open Chrome Settings page.

Now you’ll find a new option “Dark Mode” as shown in following screenshot:

Tap on Dark mode option and set the toggle button to ON.

That’s it. It’ll immediately apply new Dark Mode in Chrome on Android. Menus, toolbars, pages and everything else will be shown in new Dark UI.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: If you can’t find Dark Mode option on Settings page, completely close Chrome app using Recent apps button on your mobile phone and close all running apps. Now relaunch Chrome and you’ll get Dark Mode option on Settings page.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: You can also use Chrome://restart command in address bar to completely restart Google Chrome and apply changes.

PS:

If you want to disable Dark Mode in future, set the Dark Mode option to OFF in Chrome Settings. To permanently deactivate Dark Mode feature in Chrome, you can reset “Android Chrome UI dark mode” flag to Default in Chrome://flags page.
