[Tip] Google Chrome Tips-n-Tricks Which Also Work in Microsoft Edge Browser

Microsoft’s new web browser “Microsoft Edge” is Chromium-based. Chromium project’s rendering engine “Blink” also powers one of the most popular web browsers Google Chrome.

Since both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome are powered by same rendering engine, both provide similar features and functionality. That’s why many tips-n-tricks and tweaks which we shared long time back for Google Chrome web browser now also work in the new Microsoft Edge web browser.

In this article, we are going to share some very useful, interesting and hidden secret tips-n-tricks which work in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers and help you in revealing and adding some extra features and functionality to the browsers. You’ll definitely love these tips.

Let’s start:

1. Enable Dark Theme Mode on All Websites and Pages

This is the most amazing tweak. You can activate a hidden dark mode in both web browsers which will open all websites and built-in pages in dark mode as shown in following screenshot:

2. Enable Hidden Secret Focus Mode Feature

Focus Mode feature allows users to launch a tab to a new browser window which doesn’t show any toolbar, address bar, tab bar, etc. It only contains the titlebar as shown in following screenshot:

It allows users to focus only on the web page, that’s why it’s called Focus Mode.

3. Enable Tab Groups Feature

Tab group feature allows users to organize tabs into visually distinct groups, e.g. to separate tabs associated with different tasks. You can right-click on a tab and select “Add to new group” option. It’ll create a new tab group and will add the selected tab to this group. Now you can add multiple tabs to this group by right-clicking on a tab and selecting “Add to existing group” option. If you want to remove a tab from a tab group, you can right-click on the tab and select “Remove from group” option.

4. Enable Tab Hover Cards Feature

When you move the mouse cursor over a tab, you get the old tool-tip showing the web page title only. When you activate Tab Hover Cards feature, it replaces the classic tool-tip with a new card UI showing web page URL along with the web page title as shown in following screenshot:

5. Enable “Extensions” Menu Button in Browser Toolbar

With the help of this trick, you can enable a dedicated menu button for “Extensions” in browser toolbar. Once you enable the command-line parameter, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge will add a separate and exclusive “Extensions” button to the toolbar which shows a list of all installed add-ons/extensions in your web browser.

6. Always Launch or Start Browser in Guest Browsing Mode

With the help of this tweak, you can force your web browser to always launch in Guest browsing mode. Guest browsing mode is implemented in web browsers to improve privacy. When you browse Internet using Guest mode in your web browser, the websites you open are not displayed in web browser’s history. Also your visited websites don’t leave any other traces like cache, cookies, etc. Once you exit Guest mode, your browsing activities are automatically deleted from the computer.

7. Enable “Navigation Suggestions for Lookalike URLs” Feature

“Navigation suggestions for lookalike URLs” feature notifies users if they make typing mistakes while opening a popular website such as google.com. Many phishing websites may take advantage of these typing mistakes. They buy similar looking URLs/domains so that if people make mistakes while typing a popular website URL, their fake websites open. These visually similar looking URLs/domains are called typo-squatting.

8. Enable/Disable Websites Notifications to Show in Windows 10 Action Center

With the help of this tweak, you can decide whether your web browser should show websites web/push notifications in its own classic built-in notification center or in Windows 10 native Action Center.

9. Enable “Back Forward Cache” Feature for Faster Navigation

“Back Forward Cache” (or bfcache in short) feature can improve the navigation through web pages using back and forward buttons. This feature caches or captures pages in memory and preserves javascript and DOM state when the user navigates away from the web page. So when the user navigates back to the page by clicking on back/forward buttons present in toolbar, the browser restores the full state of the page from memory which makes the web page navigation faster.

10. Browser doesn’t Confirm or Warn Before Closing Multiple Tabs

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers don’t confirm or warn before closing multiple tabs. This feature is called “Warn on Close” (also known as “Warn on Quit” or “Warn on Exit”) which is not present in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers.
