[Tip] Disable New Tab Hover Pop-ups and Restore Classic Tab Tooltips in Google Chrome

If you upgraded to new version of Google Chrome web browser, you might have noticed the new pop-ups or labels which appear when you hover over a tab. As soon as you move your mouse cursor over a tab, Chrome shows a new pop-up preview containing tab information such as webpage title and URL or web address.

This new feature is called “Tab Hover Cards” which replaces the classic and traditional tab tooltip in Chrome. In previous versions of Chrome, this feature was disabled by default and we needed to manually activate and enable it. We told yo about this feature in following tutorial:

[Tip] Enable New “Tab Hover Cards” Feature in Google Chrome

Now Google has enabled it in newer versions of Chrome browser and all users who installed or upgraded to latest version of Chrome, get the new tab hover card feature activated and enabled by default.

This new Tab Hover Card feature might be annoying to some people as the pop-up preview appears immediately as soon as a user moves the cursor over or near a tab. Sometimes a Chrome user might move the cursor over a tab to close or move the tab or click on the tab or perform some other operation on the tab and if the new pop-up appears, it might annoy or distract the user.

Fortunately there is a way to get rid of the new tab hover card or pop-up UI. You can disable the new tab pop-up and restore classic tab tooltips in Chrome with the help of this tutorial.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now hover mouse cursor over any tab and you’ll get the classic tab tooltip showing only the website title.

PS: If you want to re-enable new Tab Hover Cards feature in future, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.

BONUS TIP:

If you are among those people who actually liked the new tab hover cards feature in Chrome, you can add extra web page thumbnail preview image to the new card as shown in following screenshot:

  1. I can’t see any reason to have the tool-tip at all, either the new version or the old version. They are both intrusive and only repeat what is already in front of our eyes. I’ve reverted to the older, small version but it’s still, and always has been, annoying. Get rid of it altogether. Tell your techs to produce useful enhancements, not just new ways to repeat what’s already there!

  2. I actually would have liked it (the speed is wonderful to me), but the only thing killing it for me is that the hover cards don’t show the ENTIRE title. Poor decision for lengthy titles. I’ll have to cobble together a bookmarklet or something to display the full title somehow, for when this flag is inevitably removed. :[ Otherwise I’d be constantly trying to view the page source for the title, like some kind of insane person. Gimme my full page titles, rage rage rage, why.

And @Genie maybe you’ve never had 20+ tabs open in one window and can’t keep track of them all? It is useful to me, dangit. Especially when I’m researching things.
