[Tip] Enable “Navigation Suggestions for Lookalike URLs” in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge

UPDATE: This tutorial to enable “navigation suggestions for lookalike URLs” feature works in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers.

Many times we make typing mistakes while typing website URLs in our web browser’s address bar. For example, you may type ‘f’ letter instead of ‘g’ or ‘s’ instead of ‘d’, etc in URLs. Many phishing websites may take advantage of these typing mistakes. They buy similar looking URLs/domains so that if people make mistakes while typing a popular website URL, their fake websites open. These visually similar looking URLs/domains are called typo-squatting.

If you are using Google Chrome web browser, here is a good news for you. Chrome 73 and later versions come with a new feature called “Navigation suggestions for lookalike URLs” which notifies users if they make typing mistakes while opening a popular website such as google.com.

Following screenshot shows how Google Chrome displays notification to the user when a typing mistake is done for popular domains and URLs:

Google Chrome shows “Did you mean to go to?” notification if you incorrectly type a popular domain or URL. In my opinion, it’s a very useful security feature added by Chrome team.

We told you about this feature in UPDATE 105 in our exclusive Chrome Canary Updates topic when this feature was under development and testing.

At the moment this feature is not enabled by default and we need to activate and enable it manually. If you also want to enable this very useful feature, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type lookalike in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

3. To enable this security feature, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated Navigation suggestions for lookalike URLs feature in Google Chrome.

PS: If you want to disable this feature in future, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.
