[Tip] Enable / Disable Multiple Tabs Selection Feature in Mozilla Firefox

UPDATE: In newer Firefox versions, multiple tabs selection feature is enabled by default. So we have updated this tutorial to provide instructions to enable as well as disable multiple tabs selection feature.

Today in this tutorial, we are going to share a small tip which will help you in activating and enabling a hidden secret feature in Mozilla Firefox which is not enabled by default. This hidden secret feature is called “Multiple Tabs Selection“. We told you about this feature a few months back in our exclusive Nightly Updates topic (check out UPDATE 120).

In Mozilla Firefox web browser, you can’t select multiple tabs. Other web browsers such as Google Chrome allow users to select multiple tabs and perform actions on the selected tabs such as pin tabs, close tabs, mute tabs, etc.

If you follow the method given in this tutorial, you’ll be able to select multiple tabs at once in Mozilla Firefox web browser and then select operations on the set of selected tabs. At the moment only one single operation/action is supported i.e. close selected tabs. But in future more operations will be added such as bookmark selected tabs, reload/refresh selected tabs, pin selected tabs, mute selected tabs, etc.

Following screenshot shows multiple tabs selected in Mozilla Firefox web browser:

To select multiple tabs in Mozilla Firefox, you need to press and hold CTRL key on your keyboard and left click on desired tabs. This way, you’ll be able to select more than one tab in Mozilla Firefox web browser.

But this feature is not enabled by default and you need to activate it using the hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

If you want to enable this useful multiple tabs selection feature in Mozilla Firefox web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button.

2. Now type multiselect in Search filter box and it’ll show following preference in the window:

browser.tabs.multiselect

3. If the preference value is set to true, it means the multiple tabs selection feature is enabled. If the value is set to false, it means the multiple tabs selection feature is deactivated and disabled.

To modify the preference, double-click on browser.tabs.multiselect preference and change its value. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.

To enable the multiple tabs selection feature, set the value to true.

To disable the multiple tabs selection feature, set the value to false.

That’s it. The changes apply immediately.
