[Tip] Change New Tab Button Position in Google Chrome

Google Chrome new version comes with new “Material Design Refresh” UI which provides round curved tabs, round edges of address bar, color changes, etc.

The new UI also comes with a redesigned “New Tab Button” (+) which is shown after opened tabs on the tab bar. “New Tab” button is used to open new tabs. When you click on the button, it launches a new tab in the browser. Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to change the position/placement of New Tab button in Google Chrome web browser.

Yes. You read it right. Google Chrome comes with a hidden secret preference to move the New Tab button on the tab bar or tabstrip. You can move the New Tab button at the beginning of tab bar or at the end of tab bar according to your requirements.

If you also want to change position of New Tab button in Google Chrome, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type new tab in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

3. This preference is set to “Default” which is after tabs. Click on the drop-down box given next to the option and you can select following options:

  • Opposite caption buttons
  • Leading
  • After tabs
  • Trailing

Opposite caption buttons” and “Leading” are same. Both moves the New Tab button to the beginning of the tab bar i.e. opposite caption buttons (min, max, close).

After tabs” is same as “Default“. It keeps the New Tab button after opened tabs.

Trailing” moves the New Tab button to the end of the tab bar.

4. Once you select a desired option, Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now you can enjoy a different position of New Tab button in Google Chrome web browser.

PS: If you want to restore default position of New Tab button, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.
