[Tip] Enable Bottom Tab Switcher Toolbar in Chrome on Android

If you are using Google Chrome browser app to browse websites in your Android mobile phone, you can activate and enable a hidden secret Bottom Tab Switcher toolbar or Tab bar called “Conditional Tab Strip“. This new toolbar will allow you to access all opened or running tabs quickly and easily. This bottom toolbar displays a list of all running tabs in form of small icons. A small “Close” (x) button is also displayed on the current tab icon to close the tab.

Following screenshot shows the new Bottom Tab Switcher toolbar live in action in Chrome on Android:

The bottom toolbar is permanent i.e. always shows on screen so you can navigate between all opened tabs easily by just tapping on the tab icon showing in toolbar.

PS: This new bottom tab switcher has been implemented to replace the previous Chrome Duet (or Duplex) split toolbar which was used to display at bottom in previous versions of Chrome app. Chrome Duet feature has been removed from newer versions of Chrome app.

[Tip] Disable or Remove New Bottom Toolbar in Google Chrome on Android

If you want to reveal and enjoy this new secret bottom tab switcher in Chrome on your Android smartphone, following steps will help you:

1. Make sure you are using latest version of Chrome app in your smartphone. Check using Play Store and if you find a new version of Chrome available, install and upgrade to it.

2. Now open Chrome and type chrome://flags in address bar and tap on Go. It’ll open Chrome Experiments page where you can turn on/off several features.

3. Now type conditional in Search flags box and it’ll show following result:

4. To enable new bottom tab switcher toolbar, tap on the “Default” drop-down box given below “Conditional Tab Strip” preference and select “Enabled Immediate” option from the list.

5. Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch Now” button to relaunch Google Chrome.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Even if we have restarted Chrome app, you’ll not get the bottom tab switcher activated. Completely close Chrome app using Recent apps button on your mobile phone and close all running apps. Now relaunch Chrome app.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: You can also use Chrome://restart command in address bar to completely restart Google Chrome and apply changes.

6. Now open 2 or more tabs in Chrome app and you’ll get the new bottom tab switcher toolbar on screen.

PS: In future, if you decide to disable or remove bottom tab switcher toolbar in Chrome, set the above mentioned preferences to Default again.

  1. Hi VG, I’m ginger I’m one of the older people you spoke of in one of your articles. 😆 Anyway. Could you please help me out. I’m trying to find out what the name of my phone is. I have a LG phone. I know the IMEI #, Model name,phone name, Mobile type etc… But what’s kind of phone is it like they have Google 7 whatever it’s called, Pixel2 etc how do i find out what my LG phone is called?   2. It actually did not work for me. I copy pasted every step, but I don’t know why it didn’t work.

  3. Used to work but Chrome must have made changes because I can’t get the bottom toolbar to show at all now.
