No New Updates for Windows 7 Users After January 14, 2020 (End of Support) Date

To let Windows 7 users know about this end of support information, Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 which started displaying a full screen banner or notification alert prompt starting January 15, 2020. The full screen banner tells users that Windows 7 is now out of support. This nag screen is shown in full screen area and appears randomly. Sometimes you may receive it as soon as you login to your user account. Sometimes it’s shown at 12:00 PM while you are working on your computer.

Following screenshot shows this “Your Windows 7 PC is out of support” full screen pop-up live in action in Windows 7 device:

[Don’t remind me again]

If you click on “Learn more” button, it opens following web page in your web browser:

Windows 7 End of Life Support Information

The web page tells users that support for Windows 7 has ended and they should upgrade to Windows 10.

If you click on “Remind me later” button, the full screen banner disappears and you get access to your desktop. But the full screen banner will reappear after some time automatically.

If you do not want to see the full screen alert again in future, you should click on “Don’t remind me again” link given at the bottom-left corner. It’ll permanently disable the Windows 7 End of Support full screen banner in your computer system and you’ll never see it again. This is the best way to get rid of Windows 7 EOS full screen banner.

FUN TIP:

Although the notification banner is shown in full screen, you can still access desktop, Start Menu, Taskbar and other programs by pressing ALT+Tab keys or Windows key.

I tried to launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together while the full screen banner was showing on my computer screen and Windows 7 opened Task Manager at the top of the banner. I took a screenshot for your viewing pleasure:

PS: I didn’t try ALT+F4 hotkey to close/terminate the full screen banner. I think it should work to exit from the full screen banner.

You can see in the above screenshot, the Windows 7 EOS full screen banner is shown by an executable “EOSNotify.exe“. If you kill or end task of this EXE file, the full screen banner will immediately remove from your computer screen.

Some Detailed Information for Advanced Users and Experts:

1. When user clicks on “Don’t remind me again” link showing in full screen banner, Windows 7 creates a DWORD DiscontinueEOS and sets its value to 1 under following key in Registry Editor:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify

So if you missed clicking on “Don’t remind me again” link on the banner and don’t want to see the banner again or if you want to block the full screen banner in advance before it starts showing in your Windows 7 devices, you can manually create DiscontinueEOS DWORD and set its value to 1 under above mentioned key in Registry Editor in your Windows 7 computers to permanently disable and remove Windows 7 End of Support full screen banner.

You can run following command in Command Prompt as Administrator to directly add above mentioned DWORD in Registry:

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify" /v DiscontinueEOS /t REG_DWORD /d 1

You can also use following command to disable Windows 7 EOS full screen banner for all users:

REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EOSNotify" /v DiscontinueEOS /t REG_DWORD /d 1

PS: The LastRunTimestamp present under above mentioned key, stores the date and time when Windows 7 EOS banner appeared last time.

2. The executable file EOSNotify.exe, which is responsible to show this full screen banner, is stored in following directory:

C:\Windows\System32

You can delete or rename this EXE file, so that Windows can’t find and launch the executable file and will not be able to show EOS full screen banner in future.

You may need to take ownership and full control of EOSNotify.exe file. Following articles will help you in taking ownership of the file:

Once you delete or rename the EXE file, you’ll not get those End of Support nag screens any more in your Windows 7 computer.

3. This EOSNotify.exe executable was downloaded to your Windows 7 computer by one of following updates released by Microsoft:

  • KB4530734
  • KB4530692
  • KB4534310
  • KB4534314

4. Apart from saving EOSNotify.exe executable on your Windows 7 computer, these updates also create 2 scheduled tasks which execute EOSNotify.exe file to display End of Support notifications and reminders. You can also delete those tasks which will stop Windows 7 to show those notifications.

Open Task Scheduler using taskschd.msc command and go to following folder:

Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Setup

In right-side pane, you’ll see 2 tasks: EOSNotify and EOSNotify2.

EOSNotify_Scheduled_Tasks_Windows_7_Task_Scheduler.png

Right-click on both tasks EOSNotify and EOSNotify2 one by one and select Disable option. It’ll disable the scheduled tasks and Windows 7 will stop showing those full screen notification messages. You can also select Delete option from the context menu to permanently delete those tasks.
